Buttermilk is more than a refreshing summer drink. According to gastroenterologist Dr. Palaniappan Manickam, popularly known as Dr. Pal, consuming buttermilk can aid in weight loss while offering several other health benefits. Dr. Pal shared these insights in a video where he explained the science behind buttermilk and its impact on metabolism and gut health.

    Gut Health and Fat Loss

Dr. Pal emphasizes that our gut functions as a second brain, influencing neurons and overall metabolism. He notes that buttermilk contains live cultures of lactic acid bacteria which support good gut bacteria. This, in turn, helps the body metabolize fat more efficiently. Studies also suggest that including curd or fermented dairy in daily meals can enhance fat loss compared to diets without such foods.

    Nutritional Powerhouse

Buttermilk is rich in essential nutrients. It contains phosphorus, potassium, vitamin B12, riboflavin, and calcium. A one-cup serving of 1% cultured buttermilk offers approximately 110 calories, 9 grams of protein, 3 grams of fat, and 13 grams of carbohydrates. These nutrients contribute to healthy bones, muscles, and overall energy production, making it an excellent addition to a balanced diet, according to WebMD.

Making buttermilk at home is simple. Fresh mint leaves, coriander leaves, roasted cumin powder, a pinch of black pepper, and fresh ginger blended with water create a refreshing drink. Traditionally, buttermilk was a staple in Tamil Nadu marriage halls but is now served less frequently. Dr. Pal recommends consuming at least two servings daily, especially in hot months.

    Other Health Benefits

    Energy Boost

Riboflavin in buttermilk plays a key role in energy production and helps regulate amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins.
