Use this calculator to know how much your ideal body weight should be based on factors such as your age, gender and height.

What does ideal body weight mean?
Ideal body weight (IBW) refers to how much a person should weigh according to his or her age, gender, height and other factors. There are various formulas to determine the ideal body weight of a person, such as the Robinson formula, Miller formula, Devine formula and Hamwi formula. IBW only gives an estimate and may not be strictly applicable universally.

While calculating IBW, factors such as body fat or muscle mass aren’t taken into consideration. Therefore, it is not a perfect measure of the health of a person. Conditions such as obesity, malnutrition and heart diseases, among others, can lead to health complexities. Maintaining an ideal body weight can help people avoid such complexities and ensure better health.

What should be my ideal body weight?
Generally, IBW isn’t a definitive factor to determine a person’s health. BMI or body mass index is a more precise factor that is used medically for diagnosing health-related conditions. Originally, ideal body weight was used by doctors to determine medication dosages appropriate for a person. However, IBW can be used to maintain proper body weight and avoid weight-related medical issues.

The formulas commonly used to determine how much a person should ideally weigh are:

Robinson Formula
For males: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet
For females: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet

Miller Formula
For males: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet
For females: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet

Devine Formula
For males: 50.0 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
For females: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet

Hamwi Formula
For males: 48.0 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
For females: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet

BMI Range
For adults over the age of 18, the recommended healthy BMI range is 18.5 - 25

Here, BMI = weight/height²

While BMI is a more precise factor used for medical purposes to determine a person’s health, the Devine formula is the most widely used one to determine the ideal body weight of a person.

What is a weight calculator?
The weight calculator is an online tool used to find out how much a person should ideally weigh based on factors such as age, gender and height. People who want to regulate their body weight can use this calculator to get an estimate of their IBW and take the necessary corrective steps.

How does this calculator work?
Also known as an ideal weight calculator or IBW calculator, this digital tool takes inputs, such as a person’s age, gender and height, and displays the ideal body weight according to various commonly used formulas and indexes.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to using this weight calculator:
