Hang Seng Index
The Index is a free-float adjusted benchmark for blue chip stocks traded on Hong Kong Exchange. The index is composed of four sub-sector indices in industry, finance, utilities, and real estate investment trusts, and comprises 50 constituents. The index uses a free float market capitalisation weighting scheme with a 10 per cent cap on any one component's index weight.
HSI was started on November 24, 1969 and records and monitors daily changes in the top companies of Hong Kong stock market and is the key indicator of the overall market performance in Hong Kong. These 50 companies represent about 58 per cent of the total capitalisation of the Hong Kong Exchange.
The index is compiled and maintained by Hang Seng Indexes Company, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hang Seng Bank, one of the largest banks registered and listed in Hong Kong.
The components of Hang Seng index include China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company , Hang Lung Properties, Hang Seng Bank, CLP Holdings, CITIC, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, AIA Group and Tencent Holdings, among others.
