OUR MISSION IS TO EDUCATE AND ADVOCATE FOR THE UNDERSERVED
The society works tirelessly to support minority physicians and improve healthcare access, especially in underserved communities. We are committed to advancing health equity, promoting high-quality care, and advocating for those who face health disparities.

Our History
Founded in 1887 A Response to Racial Justice
The roots of the Old North State Medical Society can be traced back to a time of profound racial discrimination. In the late 1800s, African American physicians, dentists, and pharmacists were systematically excluded from white medical societies and were often denied access to hospital privileges. At this critical moment in history, four pioneering Black physicians—Dr. Aaron McDuffie Moore, Dr. Manassa Thomas Pope, Dr. Lawson Andrew Scruggs, and Dr. J.T. Williams—came together to form the Old North State Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Society at Shaw University’s Leonard School of Medicine in Raleigh, North Carolina.
These founders recognized the pressing need for professional solidarity and collective action. Their efforts provided Black medical professionals with much-needed support, access to continuing education, and a platform for advocacy. This foundation would become a pillar for future generations of African American healthcare professionals.
A History of Advocacy and Impact
ONSMS has always stood at the intersection of healthcare equality and
racial justice. From its earliest days, the organization played a pivotal role in advocating for policies that protected the rights of minority physicians and improved care for Black patients.
Key moments in ONSMS history include:
- Advocating for a state-supported tuberculosis hospital for Black patients in Raleigh
- Challenging discriminatory practices during the Jim Crow era, including exclusion from hospitals and educational barriers
- Providing professional solidarity to minority physicians facing systemic challenges and discrimination
The Evolution of ONSMS
Over time, the organization evolved, expanding its mission to include the advocacy of health equity for the broader population of underserved communities. While initially focused on Black physicians, ONSMS now works to improve healthcare access and outcomes for all populations facing disparities in healthcare, including racial minorities, low-income individuals, and rural communities.
From Resistance to Resilience
What began as a response to systemic exclusion has grown into an organization of resilience, empowerment, and progress. ONSMS continues to serve as a beacon of hope and a driving force for change in North Carolina’s healthcare system. Its commitment to excellence in healthcare and professional integrity remains unwavering, even in the face of new challenges.

For over 135 years, ONSMS has stood strong—serving minority physicians and patients since 1887—and continues to be a voice for equality, professionalism, and compassionate care.
