Next trip I'm planning on getting (at last) a Thai driver's license. I'm confused as to what type of visa is needed as I've seen some places that state an Non-imm visa is needed and some that say you can secure a DL with just a TV. Any experiences with this on the forum?

Do you have to show your home driving liscense with your IDP if stopped by police? I have a valid IDP but just renewed my BC Driver's License and they can't the old one I do have the paper liscense, just not the picture liscense Thanks

I am a bit confused on the VAT being charged on car purchases here in Thailand. In the USA the VAT called Sales Tax is typically charged on the full purchase price of the car. So if the tax rate is 7% and the car is $30,000 USD you get charged $2,100 in Sales Tax. If you are purchasing a new or used car here in Thailand is the VAT charged on the full purchase price. I see several dealers indicating their prices include VAT and I find it difficult to believe they would be absorbing 7% of the purchase price. Hi there, I need to renew my Thai drivers licence early next year. I own a house in Bangkok and a condo in Pattaya. Given that the 2 properties are in my wifes name, can I renew my licence in Bangkok or Pattaya? Can I show the titles to either office or must it be the registered address on my one year visa. I purchased a car in my name and the dealer required that I have a resident certificate. I did so. I am now selling the car. Someone said, I have to provide the buyer with a resident certificate in order for him to transfer to his name. Is that true? Seems strange given I could not have put the car in my name in the first place without having a resident certificate.

Hi, I'm using a friend's bike, shes not sure if it's registered or not, ther are no papers or sticker on the bike, so if I get stopped,obviously the owner will get a fine but will I also?

Low powered electric vehicles, axxording to battery size, do not require a driving licence. But what is the current Thai law? The newly introduced rules for renewal of a UK DL, after the age of 70 is going to hit home to those of us who live here, but keep our license going for ID purposes. The new eye tests require a test and report from a UK based, qualified optician. Unless you are prepared to travel back to the UK to obtain this ( I am not) then you are screwed, as, as far as I can tell, a certificate of eye test from outside of the UK will not be accepted by the DVLC. So I just got my international drivers license. Do you need to have that booklet you get with you when you are driving, or is the card and your home license good enough to show the Thai police?

My insurance will cover me if I am legal in the UK (so would need a CBT) but also need to be legal in Thai law Seeing lots of conflicting things online. For info in the UK a CBT licence allows you to ride up to a 125cc motorcycle or scooter on the road for 2 years. You must display L-Plates and cannot carry a pillion passenger or ride on motorways. An A1 Motorcycle is like a “permanent CBT”, with the added privilege of being able to use motorways, and carry pillion passenger's.

Hope this is applicable to this group...and I should have asked before... Rented a car last week at Chiang Mai (CNX) and drove south and SW.... and thanks for the tips here. I did notice on my ~2k km trip signs for photo radar. A few times I noticed a pole with a horizontal overhang (another pole) with what appeared to be 2 sensors and a camera. I was wondering if that was the photo radar and what might be the threshold for ticketing? I think the speed limit was mostly 90km (Rt 1, 1102, 106...) and mostly I stayed under 110 but last ride I was nearer 120-25 when I passed one.... (kidding, of course....). I'm sure I read on a forum over the last week or so that part of the driving licence renewal process now includes an online video applicants have to watch.. (I know I normally skip the 'classroom' part of the renewal test). ...Is this correct..? Has any members on here knowledge of the link..? Is it for Thai nationals AND Non nationals..? Any advice would be welcome..TIA.

I need to renew the car tax but the car is at my wife name and she is not in the country before the expiry date. Can I go to the department of transport (is it the place?) with the necessary documents and do it myself? I will go to the car inspection first which I think I can do easily. But for the tax renewal I am not sure.

Just re-newed for another 5 years, and as last time, the photo is 50% my face and 50% my shirt. I asked the 'photographer' if she could zoom in onto just my face. Çannot do' was the reply. I asked why and she said the big boss says how it should be. I asked to speak to this Big Boss, but she said 'No, the one in Bangkok. Passport photos must be only the face.
