One of my friends wants to purchase a premium SUV for less than ₹42 lakh. Which car is the best choice for daily use and long-distance family travel?

Check out the Jeep Meridian, which is one of the last few remaining ICE SUVs in the Rs 30-45 lakh price range. The good news is that it delivers what your friend is looking for, the Jeep badge carries a premium positioning, and that's reflected in its upmarket and high-quality interior. The fit and finish are very good, and within your budget, you can get the fully loaded Overland variant, which is loaded with features.
You could also get a 4x4 version at this price, which, apart from being true to Jeep's heritage, has some genuine off-road capability, should they ever need it. The latest versions offer a sliding second row, which allows you to liberate more room in the third row when needed, a sore point earlier on. The only downsides are that the 2.0-litre diesel engine is not particularly fuel-efficient or refined, and resale value isn't quite as good as some other brands.

Hello Autocar Team, we are a family of four, and all of us are around 6 feet tall. We have been loyal Honda owners for over 15 years, having driven the Honda City and Jazz extensively. While those cars suited us earlier, we now require a more spacious SUV due to our height and growing needs. We have shortlisted the Jeep Meridian, Toyota Innova Hycross, Mahindra XUV700, and Skoda Kodiaq. However, we have concerns about space in the Meridian, size and safety ratings of the Hycross, interior quality of the XUV700, and maintenance costs of the Kodiaq. Our top priorities are safety, sturdiness, dependability, comfort, and a premium feel. We are not considering Kia, Tata, or MG models. The car will be used for Mumbai city driving as well as long highway trips, and we prefer a petrol automatic. Resale value is not a priority-we value driving pleasure as we will be self-driving. Our maximum budget is ₹50 lakh. Could you please advise which of these options would be the best choice for our requirements?

For your requirement of a spacious, premium, driver-focused SUV for a tall family of four, the Skoda Kodiaq is the best fit among your shortlisted options.

It offers a solid build, premium cabin quality and a genuinely engaging driving experience, which aligns well with your priority of driving pleasure. For 6-footers, the front and second rows are comfortable with good headroom and support. Also, with the third row folded, you get excellent luggage space for long trips. The petrol automatic is refined and smooth in the city, while also feeling very stable and confidence-inspiring on highways.

The Jeep Meridian, while rugged and solid, does feel tight on space, especially for taller passengers, which you have already noticed. The Mahindra XUV 7XO is a strong all-rounder, but as you pointed out, the interior quality does not feel premium enough for your budget. The Toyota Innova Hycross is extremely comfortable and reliable. But it is more comfort-oriented than driver-focused, and the interior look, feel, and quality may not meet your expectations of a premium experience.

You can also consider the Volkswagen Tayron, which is essentially Volkswagen’s version of the Kodiaq. Both cars share the same platform, engine and core mechanicals, with the Tayron offering a slightly different design and more features. However, it is slightly more expensive, and the overall ownership experience will be very similar to the Skoda.

Hello Team, I'm currently driving a Figo 1.5 Diesel, which I've driven 1.50L km since I purchased it in 2016. I'm planning on a bigger SUV, and as a diesel fan, I'm left with few options. I'm confused between the XUV7XO and the Jeep Compass (both automatic). Undoubtedly, the XUV700 beats the Compass in many aspects. I'm attracted to the Compass for its unique road presence and its reputation as a driver's car. However, I'm concerned about its poor mileage and service cost, as heard in some reviews. I need your detailed guidance.

Between the Mahindra XUV 7XO and the Jeep Compass, the XUV 7XO makes more sense overall. It is a larger SUV with a more spacious cabin and will feel like a proper upgrade from your Figo in terms of comfort and practicality. If effortless performance is important to you, the XUV 7XO is the easier choice.

Despite its size, the diesel engine delivers strong and relaxed performance, and it is also more refined than the diesel engine in the Compass.

It is worth noting that neither of these SUVs is particularly impressive in terms of fuel efficiency, but the XUV 7XO still offers a good balance of performance and usability for long-distance driving.

The Jeep Compass has its own charm and feels premium inside and out. It is also known for its driving manners. However, considering its higher purchase price, it will naturally be more expensive to run and maintain as well, which is something you need to keep in mind.

For a chauffeur-driven family of 4, which is the more comfortable car under a ₹35 lakh budget: Innova HyCross, the Skoda Kodiaq 5-seater variant, or the Jeep Meridian 5-seater variant? Which one offers the best second-row legroom?

Of these three, your best bet is the Toyota Innova HyCross. Apart from being the most affordable of the three, its MPV shape allows for maximum interior space and flexibility, and it has the best second row. It's flexible, too, with seats that slide, fold and flip. This Toyota car also has the most comfortable suspension and will transport your family comfortably and relatively silently.
The Skoda Kodiaq Lounge, sadly, is outside of your budget. Although it's more luxurious and equally refined, it's simply not as spacious as the Toyota.
The Jeep Meridian has strong badge value and a luxurious interior, but it's not as spacious, comfortable or refined as the Innova Hycross. Both SUVs are high on road presence, but just can't match the packaging superiority of the Toyota MPV.

I have a Skoda Yeti 2017, last batch with 130k on the odometer. It is my daily driving car. My running is 80 km a day on the highways. For the past few days, I’ve been having an itch to upgrade to a diesel automatic, but I couldn’t find a proper replacement for the Yeti under ₹35 lakh. The question is, should I retain the Yeti for a few more years or replace it soon?

The Skoda Yeti was a unique and very special SUV, and there's nothing quite like it on the market anymore. In fact, the entire Rs 30-40 lakh space is virtually empty at the moment, with only a few electric cars filling it, and diesel options on the whole are becoming fewer by the day.
You should definitely retain the Yeti for as long as you can, but with the knowledge that it will become more difficult and expensive to maintain with each passing year. 130,000km is a lot of mileage, and the model has long been discontinued globally, after all.
Your best bet in that price range that will give you something close to that tough, adventurous feel the Yeti was so good at delivering is the Jeep Meridian. Like the Yeti, it feels solid yet luxurious, has a strong diesel engine and comes with the option of 4x4; the advantage here is that it gets an automatic option as well.

I own a 2017 Skoda Yeti from the last batch, which has completed 1,30,000 km on the odometer. It has been very well maintained, and I have recently done a major service, including the replacement of the timing belt and water pump. However, I have started feeling the urge to upgrade. Would it be a good idea to upgrade to a new car under ₹35 lakh, preferably a diesel automatic, considering my daily running of around 80 km on the highway? Or would it make more sense to retain the Yeti for a few more years?

We understand your love for your Skoda Yeti. It's a superbly engineered car which is very well suited to Indian conditions. Your car with over 1,30,000km on the odometer would likely be the most used Yeti in India! While care and periodic maintenance will keep the Yeti running, issues are bound to crop up every now and then. Hence, there is a case for a new vehicle.

The best bet in your budget is the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel-AT in fully loaded AX7 T form. It's got a strong diesel engine, smooth gearbox, and, as someone used to a Yeti, you'll appreciate the ride and handling balance too. The XUV 7XO is also packed with lots of tech and features, which really make it feel like a good value even at its price.

Alternatively, you could consider the Jeep Compass, which, like your Yeti, comes across as a solidly engineered product. It has been around for quite some time now, but there's a toughness that shines through, and ride and handling are also really good. The 9-speed gearbox dulls some of the engine's performance, though. The Compass is also not very large for its price - something that also worked against the Yeti.

Is buying a Jeep Compass diesel automatic a good decision, especially considering that the company is offering an assured buyback option of 60 percent after 3 years or 30,000 km and 55 percent after 4 years or 40,000 km?

Several more affordable SUVs on sale are far more modern, refined, comfortable and with better performance than the Compass, which makes Jeep's pricing hard to justify.

Yes, the Jeep is an excellent long-distance cruiser; it is well-equipped, too, and if you are absolutely smitten by the Jeep Compass, the attractive buyback plan is something you could opt for.

However, if you are not a die-hard Jeep fan and are open to options, you could consider a Mahindra XUV 7XO or Tata Harrier instead.

I want to buy a 7-seater car and am confused between the Jeep Meridian and the Toyota Innova Hycross. Could you please explain the pros and cons of both models and help me decide which one would be the better choice?

Both are very different cars, so the choice really depends on what you want from your 7-seater.

The Jeep Meridian is a proper SUV. It feels solid, has excellent ride quality, and really shines on broken roads and highways. The 2.0-litre diesel paired with the 9-speed automatic is relaxed and effortless at cruising speeds, making it a very good long-distance tourer. It also feels more planted and confidence-inspiring at higher speeds. However, the third row is tight and best suited for kids, and overall space isn’t as generous as the Toyota.

The Toyota Innova Hycross, on the other hand, is more urban in nature. It’s powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine, with a strong hybrid option that delivers excellent fuel efficiency in city use. It’s significantly more spacious, especially in the second and third rows, and comfort is a big highlight. For family use and city driving, it feels easier and lighter to live with. Long-term ownership peace of mind is also a big plus, thanks to Toyota’s strong reliability reputation.

To sum up;
Go for the Meridian if you enjoy driving, do long highway trips and want that SUV feel.
Take the Hycross if space, comfort, efficiency and hassle-free ownership matter more, especially for urban use.

I own a 2011 Vento 1.6 MPI. In a few years, I want to upgrade to a bigger SUV like the Kodiaq, Meridian, or a pre-owned 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan. Which one will be more reliable and offer a peaceful after-sales experience? I live in Pune, so the service network is good for most brands. If buying new, I have the Citroen C3 Aircross in mind.

Finding a genuinely good, sparingly used example of the Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq, or Volkswagen Tiguan isn’t always easy. These are relatively expensive SUVs, and many owners tend to keep them. If you do find a 2024 model with low kilometres, full service history and no accident record, reliability shouldn’t be a major concern. They’re still relatively new and based on proven platforms and engines.
Between the three, VW and Skoda’s dealer networks tend to be more consistent than Jeep’s when it comes to the aftersales experience. Since you’re in Pune, network strength isn’t a problem, but service attitude and technical depth do matter, especially with turbo-petrol, DSG-equipped European SUVs. On that front, the Kodiaq and Tiguan usually inspire a bit more confidence. Ultimately, though, condition, service history and how the previous owner has treated the car should be your top priority when buying pre-owned.
For peace of mind, you could also explore our partner channel Spinny, which has a good reputation for selling quality pre-owned vehicles that have been inspected and come with warranty support. That reduces risk compared to buying from an unknown individual seller.
If you’re considering a new one instead, the Citroen Aircross is a very different proposition. It’s not in the same league as the Kodiaq or Tiguan in terms of outright performance, cabin plushness or road presence. Performance, too, is not in the same league.
That said, buying new has its own advantages - full warranty, zero history risk and predictable maintenance. If you’re happy with the space and don’t mind that it’s not as premium or powerful as the larger German SUVs, it can be an easy car to live with.
One word of caution: Citroen dealer experience can vary. If you find yourself having to chase the dealership repeatedly just to get a test drive or basic information, take that as a red flag.

I have recently purchased a Tata Punch and am very satisfied with the car. Previously, I owned a Dzire and a Honda Civic. Now, I am planning to buy a German car, and my budget will be around ₹50 lakh (on EMI). I am confused about which one to go for. Since this budget puts me close to the premium car market in India, I have shortlisted brands like the Jeep Meridian, VW Tayron, Fortuner, etc. My priorities are good mileage (expecting at least 15 kmpl), top-notch performance, luxury seating and comfort, and decent looks. The powertrain would be petrol manual only. Please suggest a suitable choice.

Unfortunately, none of the cars here meet your requirement of a minimum mileage of 15 kpl, and none of them offer a manual transmission with their petrol engines. In fact, the Jeep Meridian is a diesel-only SUV and does not come with a petrol engine option.
If you are flexible on mileage and don’t mind going for an automatic, we would recommend the newly launched Volkswagen Tayron. It is the best of the lot: the most engaging to drive, with a fantastic cabin, and powered by a strong and smooth 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine.
The R-Line variant of the Tayron will be well above your budget, but the standard trim, expected to arrive in April, should be closer to your ₹50 lakh budget.
