I live in Gurgaon and plan to purchase a car. The two cars I have shortlisted are the Seltos HTX 1.5 diesel automatic and the Seltos HTX 1.5 petrol IVT. My monthly running is around 1,500-2,000km. What should I choose?

Pick the Kia Seltos HTX 1.5 Petrol IVT. Since you live in Gurgaon, where diesel cars can only be legally operated for 10 years, petrol is the better choice. While your running is on the slightly higher side, the savings from choosing diesel may not be enough to offset its higher purchase price and its lower resale value in Delhi NCR.
The 1.5-litre engine is very refined, and the IVT does a good job of making it feel responsive in the city. In most urban driving, it offers adequate performance and doesnโ€™t feel strained unless pushed hard. The IVT also simulates stepped shifts, so it feels more natural and doesnโ€™t exhibit too much of the rubber-band effect that other CVTs do. If your usage is mostly on the highway and you need more performance, then consider the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol instead.
On the test drive, check if the throttle response and performance are adequate for your needs.

I am looking for an automatic, fuel-efficient car with low maintenance. My driving is 90% in the city and 10% on the highway, with a daily running of 70km through Gurgaon-Delhi traffic. My budget is around โ‚น14-15 lakh. This will be the only car in the family. For family comfort, could you please help me with this?

Choose the Honda Elevate V CVT. It might be slightly above your budget, but Honda regularly offers significant benefits.
With 90% city usage and a long 70km commute in peak traffic, the CVT will feel easier and smoother to drive than AMTs or DCTs. The 1.5-litre engine is also very refined and responsive, while being reasonably fuel efficient for a vehicle in this segment.
As your only family car, you will appreciate the spacious and comfortable rear seat and the generous 458-litre boot space. If you are looking for more features, also consider the Kia Seltos IVT, though you may need to stretch your budget a bit.
On your test drive, spend 10 minutes crawling at 5-10kph to see if throttle response and performance is to your liking. Also, check that the steering feels light and the cabin remains comfortable for your long commutes.

I am planning to purchase a new vehicle with a maximum on-road budget of โ‚น18 lakh in Hyderabad. My daily usage is quite high, averaging around 160 km, with a significant portion of driving on highways. I am specifically looking for a diesel vehicle with a manual transmission, preferably in the above 4-meter segment. My primary priorities are safety and fuel efficiency, given my extensive daily commute. However, with the wide range of options available in this category, I am finding it difficult to shortlist the most suitable car. I am currently looking at the Tata Sierra, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Creta. I would appreciate your expert recommendation to help me make an informed decision.

Go for the Kia Seltos HTX 1.5 diesel MT variant, which comes in just under Rs 18 lakh on-road. Since your usage is very high, the refined and efficient 1.5-litre diesel engine is a good choice. Your requirement for top-notch safety is met, too, with the Seltos being the current highest-scoring ICE SUV rated by Bharat NCAP.
This Kia car also gets features like alloy wheels, keyless entry and a rear wash-wipe that the similarly priced Tata Sierra Pure does not offer. With your high usage, you will also find Kiaโ€™s unlimited kilometre warranty useful.
Where the Sierra betters the Seltos is in interior space. If the space in the Seltos is not sufficient for your needs, then consider the Sierra instead. On the test drive, check if refinement, highway cruising ability and seat comfort are satisfactory for your long commutes.

I have a Maruti Baleno (2016) as our family car, which is good, but I am looking to replace it with a newer SUV. Although I read your column regularly, I am confused about which car to buy. I have a tight budget of โ‚น16-17 lakh and am looking to get maximum value for my money. So out of Seltos HTK, Duster (2026), Sierra, and Elevate, which one should I consider? My usage is 70% in the city and 30% on highways.

Pick the Kia Seltos HTK IVT as it best suits your requirements.
Your city-heavy usage benefits from its smooth and seamless powertrain, light controls and settled lowโ€‘speed ride, which make driving in traffic and parking less tiring. For weekend highway runs, it feels confident at 80-100 kph cruising speed and has enough room for 4 adults plus luggage. Within your budget, the Kia Seltos HTK gives you the core safety and convenience features without forcing you into pricier trims. The one thing you give up is advanced driver assistance (ADAS) on the HTK; those features start higher up the range.
Alternatively, if you prefer a simpler, no-frills package and prioritise easy ownership over features, consider the Honda Elevate V CVT.

I am looking for a feature-rich, comfortable petrol automatic SUV for self-driving, primarily for city use of around 300 km per month. It should comfortably accommodate five adults. My maximum budget is โ‚น15 lakh (ex-showroom, Chennai). Please suggest suitable options.

Go with the Kia Seltos 1.5-litre IVT. The HTK trim with the automatic costs Rs 14.39 lakh ex-showroom and comes very well equipped with features such as alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch HD infotainment system with six speakers, cruise control, and rear-seat sunshades. If you can stretch to Rs 15.49 lakh ex-showroom for the HTK (O), you will get a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, and more.

For your limited usage with five adults, the 1.5-litre engine offers adequate performance, while the IVT automatic is seamless in operation. The cabin is also quite comfortable and can accommodate five passengers with ease. However, the Tata Sierra offers even more space in the rear seat and is a good option if that is a priority. That said, performance from the Sierra's 1.5 NA engine and DCT combination is lackluster.

Visit the showroom with your family members to check if they are comfortable with the space inside, and take a test drive to see if the performance is adequate with passengers on board.

Hi, I am planning to buy a new Kia Seltos IVT petrol model. Can you please tell me what the mileage will be in the city and on the highway? Also, if there is any good automatic car with better mileage, please suggest one. My budget is approximately โ‚น18 lakhs.

Considering your requirements, choose the Kia Seltos HTK(O) Petrol CVT.
The Seltos' refined 115hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with the smooth and seamless CVT auto gearbox makes it well-suited to city as well as highway duties. Although Kia is yet to reveal official figures, in our real-world fuel efficiency tests, the Seltos IVT returned 10.31kpl in the city and 14.22kpl out on the highway.
However, the one thing you give up is classโ€‘leading fuel efficiency as some strong hybrids in the segment manage 20-26 kpl. So if mileage is paramount, go for the Maruti Suzuki Victoris strong hybrid, but you'll have to stretch your budget a bit.

I am currently driving a 2020 Honda Amaze and am looking to upgrade my car. My usage is 95% city driving, with around 500 km per month. My budget is approximately โ‚น20 lakh, including the exchange value of my current car. Which car would you recommend for me, considering I live in Mumbai?

Go for the Kia Seltos HTX with the 1.5-litre engine mated to the IVT automatic. Since 95 percent of your driving is in the city, you will appreciate its smooth and easy-to-drive nature.

The 1.5-litre engine is very refined, and the IVT makes good use of the available power. It feels responsive to light throttle inputs in city traffic and offers adequate performance for most scenarios. It also simulates shifts in eight steps, so it feels more natural than most CVTs and doesnโ€™t exhibit too much of the rubber-band effect you might have experienced with your Honda Amaze CVT. The Seltos is also thoroughly modern inside and out and packed with features, so it will feel like a big step up from your Amaze.

The one thing you will compromise on is outright performance; the 1.5-litre petrol with a CVT prioritises smoothness, so quick highway overtakes above 80kph are not exactly effortless. If that is a concern, then consider the turbo-petrol Seltos instead.

During the test drive, crawl in stop-go traffic to assess creep and throttle response, and check steering lightness and ride comfort.

Hi, We are looking to buy a good car within a budget of โ‚น25 lakh. Our top priority is comfort. The car will mostly be used for daily commuting (20-25 km) and occasional city drives on weekends, with outstation trips once every couple of months. The car should be suitable for a family of three, including myself (25 years old) and my parents in their 50s. Please suggest suitable options.

You should look at the Kia Seltos GTX (A) 1.5 petrol CVT, which falls well within your budget. It's among the best new mid-size SUVs around, with loads of space at the front, and crucially in the rear seat as well. It's got ample ground clearance without being too high off the ground to be a challenge to get into and out of. It's easy to drive with light controls and good manoeuvrability, which should be handy on your daily commute.

Most importantly, the 1.5 petrol CVT is the best suited to city use of all the options, and is strong enough to work on the highway as well, with decent fuel economy. It's comfortable around town, too, with good high-speed stability for your out-of-town trips. The GTX (A) is the fully loaded variant with all the bells and whistles, including ADAS, should you want it. The new Seltos recently scored 5 stars in Bharat NCAP crash test ratings, for a bit of extra peace of mind.

Alternatively, you could consider the Hyundai Creta, which has the same engine and gearbox, but feels a little dated now compared to the Seltos.

Recently, I sold my 2012 i20 Magna, which I bought 4 years ago. Fixed my budget to 5 lakhs and looked for a car in second hand market. Then my friends and relatives suggested me to go for a new car. I didn't get any for my budget. So, I increased my budget to 8 lakhs. I've shortlisted Exter, Punch, Magnite and Citroen. First, I visited the TATA showroom. I'm 6'1" tall, and my legs were colliding with the steering wheel, and it was the same with the Altroz. I was shown Nexon, which is more than 10 lakhs, so I went for my other choices. Next, I visited Hyundai, I checked the i20 and the Exter. Same issue with the i20, and I was comfortable with the Exter. So I did not check Nissan and Citroen. The showroom I visited did not offer a Test drive, but the other showroom (PeeYesYem) I enquired offered a test drive and followed up. Then I searched for Cons in Exter, the main thing that can be found on the internet is rear suspension and Body roll. So I waited, then came 3XO into the picture and I seems worth for money. I picked 3XO RevX M, and I visited 3 showrooms, but none of them offered a test drive. Initially, they will ask for arranging the test drive, and then they will arrange it. They don't follow up. One of the showrooms I visited twice, and asked for a test drive. Still, they didn't provide. I gave feedback on the official website as well still no response. The attitude is very poor from the Mahindra sales team across the showroom, so I took a step back. My mind is stuck between Exter SX and 3XO RevXM. Can you please suggest one from above or any other car around 10L? Requirement: Mileage and Value for money. Want to hold for the long term. Thanks a lot!!!

Between your two choices, the Mahindra XUV 3XO offers more for your money. It sits a segment above the Hyundai Exter and therefore has more interior space. That said, only go ahead with the Mahindra if the showroom is willing to offer a proper test drive.

In terms of the powertrain, the XUV 3XOโ€™s turbo-petrol engine offers stronger performance than the Exterโ€™s naturally aspirated unit, while ride and handling are also superior. While you will be giving up some creature comforts compared to the Hyundai, such as a dashcam and keyless entry, the XUV 3XO is still very well equipped for the price. In our real-world tests, the XUV 3XO managed 10.4kpl in the city and 14.9kpl on the highway, which is actually better than what we recorded in the Exter.

What you do give up is boot space. Despite its larger size, the XUV 3XO actually has a smaller boot than the Exter. If that is a concern, then consider the Kia Sonet HTK 1.2-litre petrol MT instead.

On the test drive, check if the clutch and shifter action are to your liking, and whether performance and refinement meet your expectations.

My budget is โ‚น18-20 lakh. Requirements: automatic, Android Auto, comfortable for five people. The only car that I have liked so far is the Kia Seltos, but the waiting period is over 10 weeks. Are there any other cars with a similar width to the Seltos?

In terms of width and interior space for five occupants, the Tata Sierra is a good choice for your needs.
Your key requirement is space for five, similar to the Seltos. The Sierra is only about 10mm wider than the Seltos, but crucially, it is 80mm longer and can comfortably seat five. It is also comparable to the Kia Seltos in terms of powertrains, ride and handling, features and safety.
However, the Sierra is in high demand, and waiting periods could be similar to or even longer than those of the Seltos, depending on the variant. If that is a concern, then consider the Tata Harrier.
On the test drive, seat three adults in the rear and do a 10km loop. Check shoulder room, noise levels and suspension comfort with the car fully loaded.
