  • We want to help people understand what open source actually is. The web didn't always feel like someone else's property. At our San Francisco Code for the People panel and screening, we dove into how to make it that way again. We packed the house at KQED. The panel featured WordPress co-founder and our CEO Matt Mullenweg, producer Michael Dinh, KQED Editor-in-Chief Ethan Toven-Lindsey, and Bay Area Video Coalition Media Executive Director Paula Smith Arrigoni . They brought real energy to a conversation about ownership, open collaboration, and why the future of the web belongs to the people building it–and the people using it. • Some websites are a launchpad for a whole community. 🎙️ Meet Women at Work, a podcast from Heystudio founder Verònica Fuerte that amplifies female creatives across design, creativity, and innovation. It started from a trend she'd seen her entire career: women have always shaped the design industry; they just haven't always gotten the credit. Her fix? Put those voices front and center, so the next generation can see themselves in them. When the podcast grew big enough to need its own home, the choice was easy. Hey Studio already ran on WordPress, and as Verònica puts it, "I know that WordPress is going to be forever." Now episodes, guest stories, and the mission all live in one place on WordPress.com, with a professional presence that matches the quality of the conversations. And she's thinking even bigger. A podcast, she says, is a community, and this one is just getting started. 🌟 Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gRWgjixH

  • ICYMI: dev/ai/nyc brought visual artist Khyati Trehan to our NoHo Space for a wide-ranging talk on art in the age of new technology, in conversation with our Head of Design, Kelly Hoffman. Khyati's work has left its mark across culture, from Apple and Instagram to the Oscars, The New York Times, WIRED, and Vogue, alongside honors from Forbes India, ADC Young Guns, and Adweek. All while keeping her personal practice rooted in early-stage tech. The two traced how they each found their way into design and sat with the question on everyone's mind: what do these emerging tools really mean for artists, agencies, and the next generation of creatives? Swipe through for a few of our favorite moments from the night. 🍎 Watch the full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/gvDZ2jxu 🍎 And we'll see you at the next one in August!

  • We brought Code for the People to New York City for its first public screening, and the room delivered. The film explores the people, communities, and ideas behind the open web, and the conversation that followed raised an important question: What does it mean to own your corner of the internet rather than rent it from a platform that can change the rules whenever they want? Director Bao Nguyen joined panelists Anil Dash, Todd Spangler, Eric Binnion, and Paolo Belcastro for a thoughtful discussion about ownership, open collaboration, and why the future of the web depends on people building it together. Watch highlights from the July 1 screening and panel below, then check out the full discussion: https://lnkd.in/dGZppqRt And if you haven't seen Code for the People yet, you can stream the documentary free here: https://a8c.co/cftpli

Most software licenses define what you can't do. Open Source starts from a different premise: what you're free to do. That idea has shaped the modern web for decades. It's also why so many organizations continue to build on an open foundation. Code for the People tells the story behind that philosophy—and why it still matters for the future of the web.
