Two years ago, Hurricane Helene ravaged Western North Carolina. The damage was catastrophic: more than 230 people lost their lives, and there was billions of dollars worth of damage. It also knocked out power, water, and cellular services for the region. In his article, published by Nieman Journalism Lab, Neel Dhanesha tells the story of how Emergency Mode for News was born in the wake of this disaster to provide journalists with the tools they need to cover disasters effectively. Funded by a grant from Press Forward, we're working alongside OpenNews and NC Local to build Lite Sites, a WordPress-based plugin that strips sites down to a text-only version that loads quickly during cellular outages, and Rolling Coverage, a liveblogging tool that allows journalists to post updates to developing stories as they come in. Both tools are open source and will be available for any digital newsroom to access. Thank you, Neel, for sharing this story! Read it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eZ2rAa3U

Hong Kong Free Press Editor-in-Chief Tom Grundy describes Hong Kong as "one of the most complicated press freedom situations in the world." This is especially true after the 2020 security law that forced thousands of journalists out of work, put more behind bars, and led to newsrooms being raided. Tom's job is to manage the ever-shifting red lines of that press freedom situation. He and his team are on the ground, getting the news out to Hongkongers. They are not developers. Nor do they have time to worry about the technology side of running a newsroom. That's why they started using Newspack. Over the years, Tom has worked with Newspack to develop eight member benefits, such as exclusive columns and merchandise discounts, and to 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐛𝐲 33% 𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦. He also mentions 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐧𝐨 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞. Tom finds it reassuring that Newspack is part of Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. Because Newspack is built on WordPress and hosted on WP Cloud, Grundy can focus on journalism knowing the site is secure. “𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘺, 𝘵𝘰 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘮, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘈𝘐, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦.
