Boris Maslov, PhD liked thisBoris Maslov, PhD liked this𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 BEI corp. at About:Energy, 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗪𝗵/𝗸𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗻 🔋 It was great to host Josiah (Changdeuck) Bae, David Yoon, Jaehee Sweeney, and Changkyun Han from the BEI leadership team this week and discuss where their lithium metal cell programme is heading, both in terms of the cells already in customer programmes and what comes next. BEI are one of a very small number of manufacturers shipping lithium metal cells into real UAV applications today. That alone makes them worth paying close attention to. What stood out in our conversations was how directly customer feedback from live programmes is feeding back into cell development decisions, shaping the roadmap around lifetime, energy, and power in ways that a purely lab-driven programme would not. The challenge with lithium metal has never been the energy density number. It has been making a cell that holds together across the cycle life and operating conditions that a UAV programme actually demands. BEI are working on that problem with real field data behind them now, which is a different position to most of the field. One thing that rarely gets acknowledged, and that I underappreciated as a materials scientist: lithium metal has the highest specific heat capacity of any solid metal. Combined with the extremely low internal resistance of these cells, that translates directly into a thermal advantage at the pack level. A lot of the overheating challenges that define drone battery design today are materially reduced, not through pack-level thermal management heroics, but through the electrochemistry itself. More details on what BEI are developing are coming soon. I cannot share specifics yet, but the direction is compelling for anyone operating at the performance limits of UAV battery technology. The cell evaluation problem in this space is real, and the gap between manufacturer data and in-application performance is wider for lithium metal than almost any other chemistry. More on how we are helping customers close that gap shortly. 🛸

The U.S. is projected to add 24 GW of utility-scale battery storage in 2026. That pushes total capacity well beyond 40 GW. Most of the headlines are focused on Texas and California. But the real talent bottleneck is forming on the East Coast. • PJM queue reform is finally unlocking capacity • New York is pushing toward its 6 GW storage mandate • Maryland just passed a 3 GW target • Massachusetts continues to scale aggressively • 6.5 GW deployed across the Carolinas The capital is there. The interconnection is finally moving. But there’s a growing execution risk: The VPs of Development, Interconnection leaders, and Heads of EPC with real utility-scale storage experience are already deployed — and heavily insulated. If you’re an East Coast developer relying on job boards or inbound applicants, you’re competing for a talent pool that barely exists. Scaling a regional BESS pipeline right now requires national access. Sodium-ion batteries nearing maturity, could make EVs the lowest cost vehicle option = better affordability and cold weather performance. The small China firm HiNa has built the world’s largest sodium-ion battery (SIB) storage system, a 100 MWh system in Nanning, Hubei, in July of 2024, the first stage of a planned 200 MWh system. CATL Naxtra SIB, BYD MC Cube-SIB, and HiNa Haixing have made commercial SIB battery announcements. LG Chem has partnered with Sinopec to develop SIBs. In China, the expectation is that in 2027, the cost of SIB will move toward $0.04/kWh prices typical of LFP. Given lower SIB material and production costs, when that happens, no one will want to be left behind as the inevitable shift to SIB becomes evident. Technological developments will move the SIB to lower costs than LFP. SIBs will bring electrification market penetration to new levels and new large-scale application, with costs that will sweep away remaining questions of renewable economics and add further pressure to car companies to switch to EVs, cementing batteries as the lowest cost choice. Most spectacular, SIBs will push the market open for long-distance electric ships and all ships in general. High tariffs won’t succeed in protecting the U.S. and Canada. https://lnkd.in/eym5ew8n

Four years ago, the nuclear sector was dismissive of openly talking about reprocessing / recycling spent fuel. If you brought it up in most serious rooms, it was treated as unrealistic—or simply not worth discussing. When we came on the scene out of stealth in 2022, there honestly wasn’t much real support yet—except for a few key champions like Jenifer Shafer. You could feel interest building, but most of the ecosystem still defaulted to: “Not economical,” or “That’s the government’s problem.” At the same time, the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) work was already brewing something. Quietly, technically, methodically—laying groundwork that would later help shift what was considered “serious” and what wasn’t. That’s why it was so striking to hear reprocessing and recycling show up as a main part of yesterday’s House Committee on Energy and Commerce conversation. Not a taboo. Not a footnote. A real pillar of the discussion. The Overton window is moving. The conversation is shifting from “why are you even talking about this?” to “how do we make it practical, financeable, and scalable?” Things are changing fast—and it’s incredible to be even a small part of it. #nuclear #fuelcycle #spentfuel #reprocessing #recycling #cleanenergy #energysecurity #innovation
