Francesca Carlos reposted thisFrancesca Carlos reposted thisFive years ago, if you’d told me I’d write a book about slowing down, I probably would’ve laughed. What changed wasn’t my personality. It was a question I couldn’t stop asking. Everywhere I taught, I met talented people who genuinely wanted to do great work, yet many worked in environments that made that far more difficult than it should have been. Constant interruptions, competing priorities, and even leaders with the best intentions often pulled people’s attention away from the work they cared most about. I found myself asking: What was the difference between leaders who created space for people to focus and those who unintentionally amplified the existing chaos? To find out, I started asking everyone I could two questions. Tell me about a leader who created space for you to focus on priority work. What did they do? Now tell me about a leader who made it nearly impossible. What did they do? Hundreds of interviews and thousands of survey responses later, patterns began to emerge. Those patterns became the 12 Pauses. Each Pause is a leadership practice that helps leaders create an environment where people can do their best work. We found that no leader practiced all twelve consistently. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s knowing which Pause your team needs most right now. Today, Pause is finally out in the world! I’m deeply grateful to the hundreds of people who shared their stories, the thousands who completed surveys, the early readers who patiently worked through drafts and more typos than anyone should have had to endure, and everyone who challenged our thinking along the way. Thank you for helping shape this book into something far better than we could have written alone. My sincere hope is that Pause helps more leaders create the conditions where people can focus in an otherwise distracting world. People show up wanting to use their talents and do work they’ll be proud of. The question is whether we will create the conditions that make that possible.

We presented our work in researching the state of women's economic security and childcare in the state of Mississippi at the National Women's Studies Association conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Though our group's role in the Mississippi Semester is over, we are so excited to see the #research progress with future classes lead by Professor premilla nadasen.

This first year has been full of opportunities to learn from an exceptional team, contribute to bestselling campaigns, and work with authors whose writing I’ve long admired. Huge thanks to Clare Maurer and John Mark Boling for their endless guidance. Some favorite moments include leading my first hardcover campaigns for CLEANER by Jess Shannon and THE TOP OF THE WORLD by Ethan Joella; helping bring campaigns to life for authors including Alice Hoffman, Jesmyn Ward, David Szalay, Chris Kraus, Shonda Rhimes, Mona Awad, Laura Dave, and more; and experiencing a true full-circle moment working on Bonnie Garmus's forthcoming PECK & PECK (publishing this Oct!) after writing my undergraduate thesis on LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY. I hope you enjoy a few snapshots from these past twelve months. Here's to another year of championing books, and everything still to come!
