KC Cox posted thisAccording to Gartner, overall marketing budgets are 7.7% of revenue. That's down from 9.1% in 2023, even further below the 10% industry benchmark It’s time to flip the B2B budget script. We all know the stat: B2B buyers complete roughly 70% to 80% of their journey before ever talking to a sales rep. They are doing independent digital research. They are reading peer reviews. They are consuming content. They are building shortlists. All completely anonymously. Yet, when you look at typical B2B budgets, the allocation is stuck in 2015: ❌ 70% to Sales ❌ 30% to Marketing We are funding the last 20% of the buyer journey like it’s doing 100% of the work. If Marketing owns the vast majority of the modern buying process, Marketing needs the budget to match. Continuing to underfund marketing while scaling up outbound sales reps to cold-call buyers who don't want to be called isn't just inefficient—it's actively misaligned with how people actually buy. The organizations that realize Marketing is a revenue engine—not a cost center—are the ones that will win the next decade. Funny thing is, most of my friends in sales agree with me on this. Gartner's says buyers spend only 17% of their total buying time meeting with suppliers. The remaining 83% is spent: researching, discussing internally, validating options, building consensus, preparing business cases. Forrester says 67% of the buying journey happens before ever talking to a sales rep. Research from Forrester, Demand Gen Report, and related benchmark summaries indicates buyers typically consume: 12–13 pieces of content over several months before making a purchase decision. 94% of buying groups rank vendors before talking to anyone in sales. Hockeystacks says there are typically 71 touch points from first touch to MQL (marketing hand raise) in a SaaS buyer journey. First? How often are you looking at your NRR data to guide your growth strategy? Second? What are you doing as part of your growth strategy to ensure you are acquiring customers who will not only stick but also increase MRR over time?

Meanwhile more and more of the customer journey lands on marketing if 70-80% of the buying process is done before ever talking to sales than marketing should get 70-80% of the GTM budget but most organizations have it flipped.
