So she built a fix from her mom's living room. Her boyfriend became her co-founder. Their first product? Online yearbooks. Then she aimed bigger. Way bigger. She pitched to over 100 venture capitalists. Every single one said no. Three years of rejection. Some dismissed the idea. Some couldn't see past the geography. A design startup from Perth? Khamila Alebiosu reposted thisKhamila Alebiosu reposted thisI'm not an alarmist, but if you're in leadership: We are 2-3 years away from ALL business and labor being totally transformed. This is hard to prepare for because there's no roadmap! Here's what you need to do: FIRST: Let's look at the evidence. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ WHAT THE DATA SHOWS World Economic Forum's Latest Report States: - 170 million new jobs will be created by 2030 - 92 million current roles will be displaced - 44% of workers will need reskilling within 5 years IMF Research (2024): AI will affect almost 40% of global employment, with different impacts across economies: - Advanced economies: ~60% of jobs exposed to AI - Emerging markets: ~40% of jobs exposed - Low-income countries: ~26% of jobs exposed ++++++++++++++++++++++++ WHAT'S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW Measurable Current Changes: • Google reports 25% of all new code is now AI-generated • Meta has announced plans to replace mid-level engineers with AI tools in 2025 • 92% of companies plan to increase AI investments in the next three years ++++++++++++++++++++++++ DIRECT STATEMENTS FROM INDUSTRY LEADERS Sam Altman, OpenAI: • AI agents will begin transforming the workforce as soon as 2025 • These systems will perform tasks similar to early-career software engineers • Could be deployed across thousands or millions of instances Dario Amodei, Anthropic: • Projects AI systems will be broadly better than humans at most tasks by 2026-27 • Anticipates transformation across multiple sectors including most workplace technologies ++++++++++++++++++++++++ DOCUMENTED INDUSTRY SHIFTS Current Market Changes: • 25% of global digital jobs becoming fully remote • Growth sectors identified: technology, green energy, human-centric roles • First AI agents actively joining workforce operations in 2025 ++++++++++++++++++++++++ WHAT TO DO: This isn't just another strategic planning exercise. Here's what actually works: 1. Comprehensive Upskilling - Not Just Tools • Tools don't create transformation - behavior change does • Just like giving someone a treadmill doesn't get them in shape, giving them AI tools doesn't create innovation 2. All-Organization Approach • Best solutions often come from unexpected places • Every department will be transformed - this isn't like digital marketing that affects one area 3. Strategic Integration • This affects everything: strategy, delivery, operations, legal, HR • Your front-line workers will know best AI can make the biggest impact • Success requires both top-down support and bottom-up innovation ++++++++++++++++++++ When your company is ready, we are ready to upskill your workforce at scale. Khamila Alebiosu reposted thisKhamila Alebiosu reposted thisHow to use AI to learn anything faster. I tend to be skeptical when it comes to AI. But there’s one area where I see it having huge potential: Learning and education. I imagine a future where each of us has a kind of personalized AI tutor or research assistant—always available to break down complex topics, quiz us on what we’ve learned, and suggest ways to apply new knowledge in real-world situations. We're not quite there yet, but this cheat sheet from Moritz Kremb is a great start. 👇 Here are the prompts to copy and paste: 1. Explain Like I'm 5 “Explain [insert concept or topic] as if you were talking to a 5-year-old child. Use simple language and everyday examples." 2. Examples and Analogies “Explain [insert concept or topic] using three different real-world examples or analogies that would be easy for a beginner to understand." 3. Motivation "I'm struggling to stay motivated while learning [insert subject or skill]. Provide me with 5 practical strategies to boost my motivation and maintain consistency in my studies." 4. Khamila Alebiosu reposted thisKhamila Alebiosu reposted thisI wanted to "change the world" in my early 20s. But I was sacrificing my relationships with the people I loved to be "successful" Then one of my mentors sat me down one day and said: If you want to change the world, go home and love your family. It hit me so hard that I immediately knew what to do. I set up weekly date nights with my sister so we could mend our relationship. Then weekly date nights with my girlfriend (now wife). And later on, I set up weekly family nights with both of my siblings. My family never came second after that conversation. And it was the best decision I ever made. Unsurprisingly, my career and businesses took off shortly after and it was incredible to know that I always had their backing. And they knew that they were my first priority. If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.

Khamila Alebiosu reposted thisKhamila Alebiosu reposted thisFor the first time in 20 years, the pay gap between men and women has actually grown. The average woman working full time made 83% of what a full-time working man-made—down from 84% in 2022. Across races, those stats look different still: In 2023, Latinas were paid 51 cents for every $1 White, non-Latino men earned; Black women were paid 64 cents, compared with 66 cents; Asian women were paid 83 cents, compared with 86 cents; and White women were paid 73 cents, compared with 74 cents. To add some context, this has historically been a slow-moving battle. The average woman was earning just 74% of what a man earned in 2000. This updated stat shows that the work women do is widely undervalued, and we must continue to advocate for what we deserve. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gp6zTpNk

Khamila Alebiosu liked thisKhamila Alebiosu liked thisToday, I’m taking on the role as CEO of LinkedIn. I joined LinkedIn in May 2008 as employee #300ish, and it’s easy to say that my time at the company has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. It’s shaped me as a person for the better because of our people, our culture, our mission and vision, and the way we come together to take on meaningful challenges and create real impact. All of it. LinkedIn is about economic opportunity, and growing up I remember hearing stories of finding economic opportunity from my own family history, with my grandparents opening up local businesses in Maine and Pennsylvania to create a better life for their young families. The power of economic opportunity and the promise of LinkedIn has never been more important than it is today as the world is transformed by AI and professionals everywhere must transition along with it. I’d like to take a moment to thank Mike Gamson for hiring me and teaching me about building exceptional culture, Ryan Roslansky for his leadership and partnership over the many years of working together (and in advance for the years ahead), and all my fellow LinkedIn employees for the opportunity to learn with and from them. As I step into this role, similar to how I have approached new responsibilities in the past, I’ll start by learning and listening… connecting with our team, members, creators, and customers, each of whom make LinkedIn the platform that helps create economic opportunity.

Japan recorded only 727,277 births last year, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare—a troubling milestone attributed, in part, to an intense overtime culture that forces many women to choose between pursuing a career or starting a family. While it’s disheartening that such drastic measures were needed to spark change, initiatives like free childcare services and egg-freezing programs mark a step forward. It is also adding a new “childcare partial leave” policy, which will allow some employees to work two fewer hours per day. “We will continue to review work styles flexibly to ensure that women do not have to sacrifice their careers due to life events such as childbirth or child-rearing,” said Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike. These efforts not only support individuals but also pave the way for a more sustainable and equitable society. Progress is progress. When we build a future where women thrive, everyone wins.

I always appreciate Chicagoans who reinvest in our city and empower talented, visionary entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams. One such group of extraordinary leaders are the six individuals behind Fifth Star Funds, founded a few years ago and gaining strong momentum in 2026 by providing early-stage funding to tech founders of color. The group - Stella Ashaolu, Kyle Backer, Tim Huelskamp, Osayanmo Osarenkhoe, Nate Pelzer, and Tracey Suppo - describe themselves as the first “friends and family” fund in the United States. While their goal of raising close to $2 million may be modest compared to many large VC firms, their focus on Chicago and on founders who have historically faced greater barriers to funding makes their work especially impactful and worthy of our support. Fifth Star Funds has partnered with the founder-led Chicago VC firm LongJump. This partnership provides additional support to the startups Fifth Star Funds backs, including coaching, coworking space, and vendor discounts. Initial investments include ThrowbackBuys, an online vintage marketplace, and Banyon Power Co., an electric vehicle charging company. The fund’s momentum this year is also reflected in its receipt of a $125,000 grant from the The Richard L. Duchossois Foundation. Thank you to these six outstanding, civically minded business leaders who help make Chicago the special place we proudly call home. Anika Goss penned an op-ed from the Detroit front lines. She knows the trifecta of identity-perception-experience is the formula for creating a forever home for people on the move. "Detroit continues to change and grow, but growth only matters if people see themselves in it. That young man at the community meeting did not talk about macroeconomic indicators or development plans. He talked about a career, a home, a future family. These are the building blocks of a thriving city. If we continue to align investment, policy and perception around residents like him, more Detroiters will see their future here. Not someday. Today. And when that happens, stories like his won’t be the exception. They will be the expectation."

For years, critics have doubted whether Illinois could turn the corner on economic growth. But the truth is, our state has spent years implementing policies that changed the narrative, resulting in growth, momentum and collaboration. As Intersect Illinois Board Chair John Atkinson explains in an op-ed for Crain's Chicago Business, Illinois has a strategy, and it’s delivering real results. From record-breaking job growth to major private sector investments across industries like quantum computing and EV manufacturing, Illinois is building something stronger — and smarter — for the future. Forge Virtual Studios • 3K followers
I love Chicagoland. The city AND the suburbs. Honestly, both have something special to offer. But like most Chicagoans know, there's a divide between the two. When we started planning Forge, we had a choice to make about where to build. The city has some genuinely fantastic virtual production studios. They're doing incredible work with major productions and well-known brands. Those downtown facilities are central to Chicago’s action and urban architecture. They’ve earned their reputation. But as we talked with smaller production companies (the 5-10 person teams building contract crews for campaigns), we kept hearing the same thing. Parking downtown is a nightmare when you're hauling gear. Traffic adds unpredictable time to your day. And honestly, a lot of these teams just prefer suburban workflows. The Google Maps Math shows that drive times from Hanover Park to O'Hare and Midway are actually pretty similar to downtown. The infrastructure is there. But you get 70+ parking spaces, truck docks, and room to breathe. So we're building 30,000 square feet out here. Two LED studios, but also production offices, high-end lounges, a catering kitchen, and green rooms. The kind of space where your clients feel impressed and your crew feels comfortable. It's not about city versus suburbs being better or worse. It's about creating an experience that works for the teams we're hoping to serve. If you build something worth the drive, geography becomes less important than the experience itself.

Great piece by our Chief of Public Spaces Officer, David Cowan, in the Michigan Chronicle highlighting how the Downtown Detroit Partnership is redefining what it means for public spaces to be truly open and inclusive. While so much of what we encounter today as “free” comes with strings attached, the parks and public spaces in Downtown Detroit are an exception—offering the community genuine, no-strings-attached programming that’s accessible to all. The op-ed dives into the intentional, long-term work behind this effort and what it means for the future of the city. Well worth a read: https://lnkd.in/gwTHfYXV

What does it really take to build meaningful participation in local democracy? Turns out, a lot more than we might think cause here's the reality: within Detroit, only 1 in 5 residents vote in municipal elections. That’s not just a number, it’s a mirror... of who’s being heard... and who’s not (And why that gap exists in the first place.) As someone who has spent years working at the intersection of equity, systems, and social impact (more broadly), this isn’t just a civic issue - it’s a systems issue that connects to issues of trust, access, clarity. And, it’s about whether people believe their voice matters, and whether institutions show up in a way that proves they do. This year I joined the board of CITIZENDETROIT ACTION GROUP and have been helping to shape a dynamic initiative that aims to (re)build that trust, connection, and drive voter engagement in Detroit's 2025 municipal elections. Through the leadership of Sheila Murphy Cockrel, CitizenDetroit has partnered with Activate Detroit and Politics on the Go, led by my phenomenal Change Collective fellow cohort member Arabia Simeon, to launch a community-powered, tech-enabled civic engagement initiative that meets Detroiters where they are - on their phones, in their neighborhoods, at the cafe, club, or their dinner tables - to increase voter turnout, confidence, and participation in 2025 and beyond. To kick off this work, last week we filmed 40+ nonpartisan (mayoral and city council) candidate videos for the Detroit elections (sidebar: Tonya Schuitmaker, J.D. Rudy Hobbs, it was great to see these stump speeches and think about what we are learning in MPLP!). In the coming days the videos and other content will be shared as part of a platform to engage and empower residents with the information they need to vote. That work might look local - but it’s deeply systemic. When people don’t vote, it’s often not apathy. It’s the result of histories that excluded, systems that confused, and signals that say “this isn’t for you.” That’s the narrative that this dynamic partnership and initiative is trying to rewrite. And it's one piece of a much bigger puzzle around building fairer, more inclusive communities - where people feel powerful enough to shape the systems around them. Grateful to the supporters and partners pushing this work forward with all the Detroit heart and hustle!
