Press Release from the GMA: SAVANNAH – Melissa Mular, Sandy Springs City Councilwoman, received the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute Certificate of Recognition during the Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) Annual Convention in Savannah on Monday, June 23. The Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute, a cooperative effort of GMA and the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, provides a nationally recognized series of training opportunities for city officials. “This is a remarkable achievement,” said GMA CEO and Executive Director Larry Hanson. “The investment that Melissa Mular has taken through her commitment to professional development, sets the standard for innovation and service in local government across our state. Melissa Mular’s achievements not only benefit the City of Sandy Springs but also strengthens their effectiveness as a city official.” To receive a Certificate of Recognition, 42 hours of training must be completed, including at least 18 hours from the required list and the Newly Elected Officials Institute. The program consists of more than 80 courses. “We are proud of our partnership with GMA to provide exceptional, practical and relevant instruction to Georgia’s more than 3,500 municipal officials,” said UGA’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government Director Rob Gordon. “The institute remains committed to being the trusted resource that city officials across Georgia turn to for the highest quality leadership and professional development training that makes a difference in the lives of the people they represent.” ### About the Georgia Municipal Association: Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit and consulting services to all of Georgia’s 537 cities. Melissa Mular shared thisI have one of these yard signs, given to me by a Constituent that attended my swearing in ceremony in January 2022. He wanted me to have it now that I was elected. I made sure that I was not on the road with my IBM job that day of the vote to become a city--the vote was simply too important to miss! Thank you to Eva, Tibby, and everyone that helped make our City become a reality. We have had--and continue to have--great leadership and a wonderful City Staff with an engaged community that is blessed with resources. Now, I find myself serving my community as a City Council member in Sandy Springs, GA, working to keep our city moving positively into the future. Melissa Mular posted thisAfter 36 years, I am standing at the “Retirement” Trailhead. Today was my last “working” day in the corporate world. These last six weeks went super-fast, but then when I look back, so have all the years—as it is said, “Time flies when you are having fun”. I have had a great career and I can’t complain one bit about the experiences that I have had as they have enriched me both personally and professionally, much of which is because of my colleagues and clients. I have led, managed, and worked with people across the globe. I have seen technology change from the last key punch machine at Mellon Bank to the technologies that we have today. “My office was my backpack” at IBM/Kyndryl and I loved every minute of it—planes, trains, and automobiles—being able to work and solve complex business and technology problems for Fortune 50 companies. But the best part, by far, was working with the very talented and intelligent people—my co-workers and Teams that I led. Leaving the people is always the hardest thing to do, but I will not miss another “staffing” or “financial” drop-everything-you-are-doing exercise. 😊 No more “mandatory meetings”, client escalation meetings, internal escalation meetings, issues meetings, financial review meetings, service review meetings, staffing meetings, and all the “meetings to get ready for a meeting” plus all the countless hours assembling, reviewing, and updating the endless PowerPoints and Excel files for these meetings. I am going to take time to focus on “self-care” and get myself refreshed. When most people retire, they can’t wait to stay up late—not me, as in my professional life in Global IT, I work way too many hours into the wee hours of the morning, so I am looking forward to going to bed at a decent hour and getting more than 4-5 hours of sleep a night. I will not miss the phone calls in the middle of the night when there are network/server/storage outages—I can turn my ringer off at night! (What a concept!). Yes, there are the closets and cabinets that need to be organized, the “deep” home cleaning that needs to be done, and the delayed home improvement projects that need to get started—standard ‘to dos’ to get caught up on in Retirement! Oh, and throw a little travel and exercise in there, too. 😊 Everyone needs a purpose, and my new “purpose” until I decide to re-join the corporate workforce, is my Sandy Springs, Georgia (population 110,000) City Council seat where I was sworn into office in January 2022. The City Council position will keep me active and learning for the next four years. I will end with a “Thank You” to everyone that has helped and touched me along the way (too many to name). Happy Trails to you and until we meet again: always bring your “A” game to whatever you do, stay safe, give love, and never stop being curious. Onwards.

Living with cerebral palsy, he learned early that determination, resilience, and ingenuity could open doors. Long before he became a developer, he was already building systems in his own way, with typewriters, carbon paper, and mimeograph sheets. Over the decades, Pedro Paulo witnessed every major shift in technology, from the first IBM PCs to the rise of AI and data science 📊. When he eventually joined IBM as a .NET Developer, it felt like coming full circle. IBM technology had been part of his journey since childhood, helping him navigate challenges and pursue opportunities many doubted were possible. His team delivered an AI solution that transformed a client's operations in ways no one had anticipated. It was a reminder of why he chose technology in the first place: the chance to innovate, collaborate, and build something that truly matters. After recording a loss of US$8.1 billion, the largest in American corporate history at the time, IBM was under immense pressure. Analysts, investors and commentators argued that the company should be dismantled. Lou Gerstner chose a different course. Rather than viewing IBM as a hardware company in decline, he saw an organisation capable of solving increasingly complex business problems for its clients. That distinction was significant. → IBM shifted from selling technology to delivering business solutions. → IBM Global Services became one of the largest services organisations in the world. → It experienced a metamorphosis that impacted it's organisational framework as well as its operational processes. → One strategic decision reshaped the company's (and the industry's) future for decades. When I joined Honeywell to lead a global business, Gerstner's book, Who Says Elephants Can't Dance?, became one of the references I returned to repeatedly. My copy still sits on my bookshelf with pages marked, highlighted and annotated from years ago. It informed aspects of my thinking as we worked through our own transformation. One passage remains as relevant today as it was then: "Culture isn't just one aspect of the game. It is the game." That observation has stayed with me throughout my career. Transformations do not succeed sustainably because of strategy alone. It demands leadership, disciplined execution and a culture capable of embracing change when certainty is in short supply. IBM's recovery was remarkable. Its willingness to redefine where it delivered and created value was even more remarkable. That is a lesson boards and executives still grapple with today as they navigate AI, digital transformation and geopolitical uncertainty. Some books explain history. I went into that race with a vision for what I hoped we could accomplish, a lot of determination, and an incredible group of friends and supporters who helped bend the needle and make it happen. Seven years later, I’m grateful for everyone who believed in me, supported me, challenged me, and helped along the way — and I’m honored to continue having the opportunity to serve this community.

Last night, I, Terry Ziemniak and Sarah Cornett had the honor of speaking during the annual Information Services advisory committee report to the Mecklenburg County Commissioners. My focus? Stressing the absolute necessity of implementing a robust Data Management framework as the foundational prerequisite for adopting Artificial Intelligence. We can't rush into AI implementation without first addressing the core issues of data quality, security, and ethics. AI is only as good as the data it's built upon, and poor governance leads to biased models, regulatory risks, and diminished public trust. Data management ensures: • 𝙏𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝𝙮 𝘿𝙖𝙩𝙖: Ensuring data is accurate, consistent, and reliable. • 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚: Meeting all regulatory and ethical obligations. • 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙘 𝘼𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩: Making sure AI initiatives serve the county's core mission.
