BLSA is an official chapter of the National Black Law Student Association, and provides academic support and encouragement to minority students through programs that include exam writing workshops, brief writing seminars, and oral argument practice sessions. BLSA’s career-oriented activities include job fairs at national and regional conventions, networking forums with the Black Law Alumni Association, and seminars on networking skills. BLSA’s involvement in community service, which includes the group’s Youth Shadow program and annual clothes drive for the homeless, is aimed at educating minorities in the Washington, D.C., area schools about opportunities in the field of law and providing legal and non-legal services to the local community. In order to help promote and support a diverse student body at the Law School, BLSA members participate in the recruitment of minority students and provide information to the Law School community about the contributions of members of the African-American community to the field of law. Blondes vs. Brunettes® was created in the fall of 2005 by a group of young professional women in Washington, D.C., led by Sara Abbott. Her sister, Kate Stukenberg, soon grew the game to Texas. The founders had a personal connection to Alzheimer’s disease and designed the event to raise awareness among their peers while also raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. The founders had a personal connection to Alzheimer’s disease and designed the event to raise awareness among their peers while also raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. Since that inaugural game in Washington D.C., the event has successfully branched out to more than 35 additional cities, raising more than $3 million and bringing thousands of new supporters to the cause. Blondes vs. Brunettes is a volunteer-driven active event for women that that brings the passion and spirit of young community leaders together to support the Alzheimer’s Association. The event concept is organized around a flag football game in which the two participating teams are divided based on the age-old rivalry between blondes and brunettes.
