The Waldorf Astoria New York reopening is a reminder that true brand value is built through discipline, long term commitment, and attention to fundamentals. What stood out most was the focus on execution. Preserving heritage while modernizing systems, investing in people, and fixing the basics that actually define the guest experience. Clean rooms, intuitive design, reliable infrastructure, and empowered teams. Technology and AI matter, but only when built on strong platforms and processes. You cannot layer innovation on top of broken systems and expect durable outcomes. Great brands are not created by constant expansion alone. They are sustained by clarity, consistency, and doing the hard work over time.

Chris Nassetta, Hilton’s CEO, highlights an important dynamic in today’s hospitality market: the strength of the high-end traveler contrasted with mounting pressure on midscale and economy segments. While luxury demand has remained resilient, the current bifurcation won’t last forever. As economic conditions evolve, the balance between rate-sensitive guests and premium travelers will shape performance across all chain scales. For investors and operators, this reinforces the need to diversify strategies, strengthen value propositions, and prepare for shifts in demand across segments. 🤔 Hotel REITs over the past five years have had a –9.5% return versus the overall S&P, which is up 74% over the same period. Meanwhile, lodging C-Corps, from Marriott to Hilton, have shined: up more than 110% in that time span, superior to the overall S&P return. The irony is this: share prices of the large publicly traded companies are up dramatically while the value of the hotels they brand has, for the most part, declined. Why Resorts Should Be Managed Like Cities Hospitality leaders often see resorts as businesses. I see them as cities. Think about it. Senior management is city hall - mayor, council, budget office. Departments operate like agencies - security as police, engineering as public works, housekeeping as sanitation. Guests are temporary citizens, and villa owners are long-term residents. Vendors act as utility providers. It’s not just metaphor. The structure, complexity, and service delivery requirements match. That’s why I believe the asset management frameworks developed for municipalities can and should be applied to resorts. We manage physical infrastructure with long lifecycles. We need capital planning, risk registers, service level agreements, maintenance standards. Just like a city does. This recent article in IAM Assets magazine reinforced this. Mark DeClercq made the case that active listening and stakeholder engagement are essential to good asset management. You can’t design systems, budget lifecycles, or set priorities without understanding who’s affected and how they experience the service. This is where hospitality lags. We listen to guest complaints reactively. We plan based on departmental wish lists or short-term budgets. Rarely do we engage stakeholders' - owners, staff, long-term vendors, or even high-return guests in shaping what we maintain, replace, or improve. If we took a governance mindset like city planners do, we’d build longer term resilience. We’d manage stakeholder expectations better. And we’d stop treating assets like expenses and start treating them like public infrastructure. https://lnkd.in/guUd7yM4

#restore #relax #recharge For the last 3 days, the Vistage Florida #Ceo #businessowner #peeradvisory group and their #spouses came together for their annual #leadership #retreat at the beautiful Conrad Hotels & Resorts in Orlando, FL. 🌞 We kicked off the day with an incredible #presentation on #sleep and #heatlh. One of the most important takeaways had to do with how our body types are derived from our ancestral lineage which explains the many differences in #shape, #diet, and #exercise.💪🏽 Did I mention that throughout this 3 hour presentation, every 45 minutes we were up doing squats for 30 seconds to get the blood flowing 👍🏽 This resort was breathtaking so we headed out to lunch at the Papaya Club to refuel before the group engaged in their afternoon activity. This open air venue was perfect 👌🏽 The goal of this activity was to increase #collaboration #innovation and #communication, all key #skills that every #leader needs to sharpen. Let me just say, some lucky #charity will benefit from this #challenge. The key takeaway was when creating #solutions and #solving #problems, we need to adopt a #prototype #mindset. There are better ways to #achieve #results that devising a plan to only find out at the end, it doesn’t deliver the expected #outcome. 😱 Our evenings were filled with #fun and #laughter. Meeting #new #spouses and #forging stronger bonds with each other. It’s the perfect ending to a highly #productive day. 🤗 Day two is where we went deep. This year, it was all about #uncovering ones #blindspots. You already know, this isn’t easy work as it requires #vulnerability, #honesty and #openness. All #egos were left at the door. ✋🏽 Honestly, this is were the push happens. It’s designed to feel #uncomfortable and the result was a #commitment to do one thing that #benefits the #member, their #employees and #families. And, yes, #accountability is apart of measuring outcomes. ☝🏽 The afternoon was spent enjoying the lovely views, connecting, sharing #stories, going deeper one on one to help solve problems, and some even got a #workout in. Did I say, this was unscheduled time, where the group chose to hang out together ☺️ I love when members gel 💝 Our final dinner gave everyone a chance to #reflect. As I connected with each guest and member, my ask was simple, “how was your experience?” In every case, they #grew, they #learned, they #connected, they had #fun, and all were #grateful for this experience in this moment! 🫶🏽 My work is both an #art and #science; my #job is the help #create #betterleaders make #betterdecisions and deliver #betterresults. #missionaccomplished 🎉🎉 In this complex world, don’t go it alone.
