Safety is the foundation on which everything else is built on. Women and girls cannot participate equally in society if they are not safe at home, at work, online or in their communities. Gender-based violence remains one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. Around one in three women globally have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime, most often at the hands of an intimate partner. The consequences go far beyond the violence itself. It can affect women’s health, economic security, education and ability to participate fully in public life. It reinforces inequalities that hold women and girls back and limits their freedom to make choices about their own lives. Ending gender-based violence requires action on every level. Prevention, protection and accountability are essential, but lasting change also means challenging the attitudes and behaviours that allow violence, harassment and abuse to continue or go unchallenged. No society can call itself equal while women and girls continue to face violence. At the Reykjavík Global Forum, we commit to advocating for stronger protections, real support for survivors, and a culture that refuses to tolerate gender-based violence. Iceland is proud to have stood with Estonia at that defining moment in 1991, and our friendship has only deepened since. President Alar Karis and I had meaningful conversations about some of the defining questions of our time - from security and democracy to education and artificial intelligence. I was particularly inspired by Estonia’s confidence in young people and its determination to equip the next generation not simply to adapt to change, but to shape it. For decades, Iceland has worked to advance gender equality. I increasingly believe that one of the great calls of our time is generational equality - giving young people a real voice and making them partners in shaping the future they will inherit. A particularly meaningful moment was the re-opening of Iceland Square in Tallinn. A lasting symbol of the friendship between our nations and a reminder that small countries can stand together and make a difference. Thank you, President Alar Karis, Sirje, and the people of Estonia for the extraordinary warmth and hospitality. We return home with strengthened friendships, new ideas and great optimism about what Iceland and Estonia can accomplish together. Aitäh, Eesti! 🇮🇸🫶🇪🇪

Lahti reposted thisWhile speaking with the advisory community in Singapore, someone asked me a thought-provoking question: What’s the biggest myth about succeeding as an advisor? The answer came to me immediately: The most impressive person on paper isn’t always the one who brings the greatest value around the table. It's an assumption I see organisations make surprisingly often. A prestigious title. A recognisable company. A long list of achievements. All of that is impressive, but the real value of an advisor is less about what’s on the CV and more about 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵. It’s about asking: What does the organisation need from an advisor right now? To succeed as an advisor it’s about understanding the situation, asking the right questions, listening carefully and providing strategic challenge where it matters most. Of course, credibility matters. But an impressive CV doesn’t tell you whether someone can solve the problem in front of them. Today around 10% of heads of state are women. 27% of parliamentarians are women. And only around 10% of global CEO’s are women. This is why one of our action items is equal representation. Equal representation in the rooms where decisions get made - governments, boardrooms and leadership at every level. Iceland, ranked number one for 16 years in the WEF Global Gender Gap Report, has come a long way when it comes to women's leadership. In 2024, Halla Tómasdóttir was elected Iceland’s second woman president. Later that year, Kristrún Frostadóttir became the country’s third woman prime minister. For the first time, women held both of Iceland’s most prominent political leadership positions at the same time. And in 2026, Hildur Björnsdóttir became Mayor of Reykjavík, adding another woman to one of the country’s most influential political leadership roles. Women also made up the majority of the new government, holding six of eleven ministerial posts. And today, 29 of Iceland’s 63 members of parliament are women - 46%. And in the City Council of Reykjavik 11 out of 23 members are women - 48%. Iceland’s progress shows what is possible, but progress does not happen by itself, and it cannot be taken for granted. At the Reykjavík Global Forum, we ask leaders to open pathways to power and set measurable goals for representation. I’m excited to be participating on the Advisory Board this year, and to connect with the other board members at our retreat this weekend. WAKE is an organization that connects professional volunteers with social enterprises that could use support. WAKE puts on a variety of programs throughout the year: USA programs are coming up next month, and they’re accepting advisors for impact trips to Colombia (March 2027) and Nepal (May 2027). In addition to collaborating on different projects, this weekend the team used Vizibly.live as an ice breaker, AND I designed a data visualization-inspired t-shirt for everyone that shows the stats from programs WAKE has done over the past 10 years. I left the session both excited and thoughtful about how best to embrace the new technologies that we have available, and a realisation that we need to continue the conversations well beyond this initial breakfast catch up.
