Rob Fink reacted on thisRob Fink reacted on thisMy sister died last week. Unexpected. Tragic. Heartbreaking. Colleen was my little sister. She was my rock. My daily pep talk. My cheerleader. The person who knew me best. The person who always pointed me back to my potential. She was also my best friend. Anyone who knows me IRL knew about Colleen. I spoke about her all the time. She was that important to me. I wish the world could have known her. She was a wonderful friend with a huge and giving heart. She showed up whenever you needed her. She was a smartass who would call you out on your shit and make you laugh at the most inappropriate times. She kicked my ass the way only a sibling can. I’m not sure what to do now. Seeing my little sister go so quickly, without warning, has put some things into a different perspective. I want to chuck it all right now. None of it matters. Except it does, because I’m not the one that died. I miss Colleen. I’ll miss her forever. She leaves a hole in my heart and in my life that will never be filled. I just wanted to honor her today.

I spent 17 years as VP of Product Development at Lexia Learning. I left in mid-2025. Last week I shipped my first app. I built the app with AI. You might be thinking that anyone can do that quickly and easily. But I quickly learned that if you want a real product that anyone can use, fully native on iOS and iPadOS, with all the support a consumer product actually needs, it takes time. It took me nine months. Here's why I took up this challenge. Last year I took over the cooking at home. I liked the recipes I was finding, but the recipe apps kept getting in my way. I didn't want to flip back to the ingredient list to find how much coriander. I didn't want to read three steps ahead to learn I should have chopped the onion before the pan got hot. I wanted a grocery list that already knew I owned cumin. No app I tried did all of it, and the small stuff adds up. It's the difference between cooking being something you enjoy, and something you get through. Marinaid saves recipes from links, photos, or videos, helps plan your week, builds the grocery list, and gives clear, specific recipe instructions. It's the app I wanted. Thanks to my son, Jackson Paushter, for the branding. And my gratitude goes to every one of my beta testers who suggested many useful features. The link is in the comments if you're curious.

I gave this card to both my sons when they started middle school. Every time one of them walked into a room holding it, my stomach dropped. You brace for the worst. That's the whole design — it only gets used when something's actually wrong. Rocco's at Ole Miss now. Luca just started at Alabama. Before they left, I told them both the same thing: the card still works. I raised them alone. I've made plenty of mistakes I won't list here. But I decided early on that I would never be the parent my kids were afraid to call. I hope they never have to use it again. I'm ready if they do.

Rob Fink liked thisRob Fink liked thisEnglish, psychology, and drama Many years ago, while working in the financial sector, I met a really helpful and wise executive who, when people asked him, "If you were going to tell someone to learn anything and major in anything for their career, what would you say?" I think everyone expected something like finance or economics. He would always say: English, psychology, and drama. His point was that any reasonably intelligent person can learn the hard-skill stuff of most roles. But the real differentiators over time were how well you could write and communicate, speak publicly and present, read a room and interact with other people, and things like emotional intelligence. At the time, I have to admit, I was like, ah, is this some kind of shticky thing that sounds clever that people say? But 20 years later, I realize how sage and interesting it was. I'm increasingly convinced that people will have many more careers in their lives, many of which will potentially be shorter and require a lot more velocity of change. Maintaining your presence, brand, and reputation; communication skills: basic financial knowledge and reading statements and reports; being able to build relationships and win over others' hearts and minds; and having general professional building-block skills will become more and more important. I would decouple from thinking that your entire sense of worth and professional advancement is some specific set of skills around your title and function. Any person can be so much bigger than that, and so much more flexible around who they are and what people perceive their value to be. I know these things are not equally easy for everyone, including because of disability, personal comfort, neurodiversity, and so forth. But I encourage people, even at an absolute minimum, to ask yourself: "Am I going beyond the narrow set of skills that I was trained for through a certificate program, work, or school?" "Am I thinking about a wider range of things that I can develop into skills and areas of mastery?" Over the years, I have found these are the real high-yield areas of personal growth for me.

Great news for Illinois and the Joliet community: Hyundai Translead, North America’s largest manufacturer of semi-trailers, is bringing two dormant factories in Joliet back to life, creating more than 2,500 jobs. The company, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company, will invest nearly $500 million to redevelop the former Caterpillar Inc. and Lion Electric facilities, expanding its manufacturing footprint beyond Mexico. This investment will support the production of truck trailers and other automotive components, delivering a significant boost to Illinois’ manufacturing sector. Congratulations to Governor JB Pritzker, his team, and the Illinois EDC, Board Chair John Atkinson and President & CEO Christy George, for securing this major win for our state. This achievement was made possible through strong collaboration with key partners, including David Boulay (IMEC Illinois), ComEd CEO Gil C. Quiniones, Cas Peters (Governor’s Office), Aly Grady (DCEO), Doug Pryor (Will County CED), Joliet Junior College, Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, Ed.D., and Paul Kearns at Argonne National Laboratory amongst many. Minnesota’s Public-Program Fraud vs. PPP Loan Fraud Why They Look Similar on the Surface — and Why They Are Legally and Institutionally Very Different Introduction During the COVID-19 era, the United States experienced two very different fraud phenomena that are often lumped together in public debate: • Minnesota’s large-scale public-program fraud (notably nonprofit-based schemes involving state-administered federal funds), and • Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan fraud, a nationwide wave of individual and small-ring abuses of emergency federal lending. Both involved pandemic relief money. Both reached staggering dollar amounts. But legally, structurally, and institutionally, they are not the same problem. Understanding the difference matters → because how fraud happens determines who is accountable.
