I’ve seen this trend as well, and it’s unfortunate that some people would take advantage of candidates who may already be under financial stress or having a hard time finding their next opportunity. It absolutely makes sense to tailor your resume to show your experience clearly aligns to a role but messaging that tries to create fear, pressure, or doubt just to sell a service is unacceptable. If something feels off, trust your gut, ask questions, verify who you’re speaking with, and do not feel uncomfortable slowing the conversation down if something does not seem right. Job searching is already hard enough. Please stay cautious, stay confident, and look out for one another. #OpenToWorkRudy Hinojo shared thisA heads up for anyone in an active job search right now. Given my background in recruiting and the coaching I do with friends in a job search, I'm seeing a pattern worth flagging. A wave of outreach is circulating that looks like legitimate recruiter messages but isn't. The pitch usually involves resume reviews, LinkedIn optimization, or promises to connect you with "top companies" -- but you need a better resume. The messages are polished, reference real job titles, and land in your inbox looking like any other opportunity. The tells: - No clear company affiliation or vague claims about employer partnerships - A referral to a "resume expert" or "career coach" partner rather than any actual role or next step - Flattery about your qualifications followed immediately by "but your formatting is holding you back" or some version of "you're a strong candidate, you just need to present better" That last one is the hook. It's designed to hit at exactly the right moment when someone is frustrated and wondering why they aren't getting traction. If you're in a search, trust your gut when something feels off. And if you have people in your network who are looking, pass this along. Are other executives or talent professionals seeing this too? Curious how widespread it is.

Here's what most people don't find out until it's too late: ❌ Employees on unlimited PTO actually take fewer days off — not more. Without a set number, no one knows what's "acceptable." ❌ No accrual means no payout when you leave. With traditional PTO, unused days can mean thousands of dollars at separation. With unlimited PTO, you walk away with nothing. ❌ Your manager still has to approve it. "Unlimited" refers to the number of days available — not your freedom to take them whenever you want. ❌ In high-performance cultures, taking time off can feel discouraged, even when the policy says otherwise. ✅ It can be a great benefit — in the right culture. Before you accept, ask: How many days do employees actually take? Is there a minimum encouraged? What's the approval process? The policy isn't the culture. Congratulations to our outstanding HR student teams for their success at the 2026 HR Student Case Competition hosted by SHRM California and San Diego State University (April 17–18). 🏆 Our undergraduate team—Lauren Saldana (team captain), Arvin Aure, Esvin Ojeda, Charlie Rosales, Jessica Tran, and Katelyn Triance—earned 1st place. 🥈 In the graduate division, Jake Edison (team captain), Joseph Escandon, Jasmine Rivas, and Yvonne Yang, earned 2nd place. Special thanks to Vaishnavi Sridhar, SHRM-CP and SHRM California, Dr. Michelle Dean and San Diego State University for organizing such a fantastic event and providing valuable learning and networking opportunities for our students. We also appreciate the HR professionals who served as judges, generously volunteering their weekend time to support and coach the next generation of HR leaders.

Rudy Hinojo liked thisRudy Hinojo liked thisURGENT: I NEED HELP Over the past year, I have applied to more than 3,000 jobs, and I have only received about 10 calls back. Each application carried hope, and each silence has been harder to process than the last. I recently went through nine interviews for one position, giving everything I had, believing maybe this would finally be the opportunity that changed everything, only to be told they chose someone else. That moment has stayed with me. As a man with a family to support, this has been extremely difficult to carry. I have always worked, always found a way to provide, and always taken pride in being able to show up for the people who depend on me. Being in a position where I am still on the job market, despite doing everything I can, is a feeling I would not wish on anyone. There are days where it weighs on me heavily, where I question myself and wonder what more I could possibly do. It is humbling, but it is also painful in a way that is hard to explain. Right now, I am asking for help. If you know of any opportunities in the Washington DC, Maryland, New York City or New Jersey area, please let me know or share this. I truly need it. Rudy Hinojo liked thisRudy Hinojo liked thisI was laid off back in September and still have not found work. I have multiple paused contracts with Mercor, so no money coming in. Unemployment is gone and I have a kid to feed. Remote work is preferred, but at this point I will take anything. Let me know if anyone has leads that aren’t more jobs like Mercor. I need something dependable and unfortunately it seems like nothing is these days. 😢 I can’t handle the stress and constant panic attacks that have been going on since the lay off and it’s gotten worse since I have no way to get my child to and from school or pay bills 😭. I’m not even kidding I woke up to a panic attack after a nightmare, hence the panic post since I don’t post on here. I am a dependable employee who keeps their head down and just does their job.

The teams have 4 hours to read, evaluate and draft the oral and written presentations…
The SHRM Case Competition consists of a two day event where teams of up to six undergraduate or graduate students from various colleges and universities compete in both oral and written presentations covering the various HR issues (i.e., Management Practices; Selection & Recruitment; Training & Development; Compensation & Benefits; Employee/Labor Relations; and Health, Safety & Security or a combination). The teams have 4 hours to read, evaluate and draft the oral and written presentations. After the four hour preparation period, the teams provide their written presentation to one set of judges for review and present their oral presentation to another set of judges. The judges receive the scoring criteria which they use to evaluate both written and oral presentations. The teams have 15 minutes to present their oral presentation. Winners receive a $2,500 price and free tickets to the Professional SHRM Conference.
Description:
Recruit and lead a team of 2-6 HR students to compete in the annual SHRM Case Competition. Assist team in becoming more knowledgeable in best HR laws and practices while improving presentation, researching, and editing skills. Register and compete in SHRM case competition. Plan and book all travel and hotel needs. Participate in all CPP PIHRA's socials and fundraising events. Assist with SHRM Merit Award. Assist with Evening with Industry events.
