We’re transforming bookshelves, communities, and lives.
At WNDB, we’re on a mission to create lifelong readers and a more empathetic world through the power of inclusive literature.
We Need Diverse Books is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that takes a holistic approach in improving literacy and building compassion by affecting change across the entire reading pipeline — turning diverse manuscripts into published books and then donating diverse titles to readers nationwide.
Our Vision
We envision a future where diverse literature is accessible to all readers and where everyone can find themselves in a book.
What We Do
Our programs serve the three key communities on the reading pipeline:
Diverse writers and illustrations who create stories that reflect our world.
Marginalized publishing workers who turn stories into the books on our shelves and in our e-readers.
Educators, students, and consumers nationwide who read diverse books — to learn, to grow, and to connect.
Our Work in Action
Check out how WNDB’s programs are interconnected, allowing us to shepherd books from a rough draft to a published book — and into the hands of readers.
Why do we need diverse books?
Children read four more hours per week when they have access to diverse books.
99% of educators agree that having a diverse classroom library is important.
For over 60 years, studies have shown that increasing access to diverse books spurs literacy rates.
Research shows that diverse books can deepen language development and spark imagination.
Our History
In April 2014, WNDB got its start as a Twitter hashtag. This simple message —#weneeddiversebooks — brought together writers, illustrators, publishers, educators, and readers from all around the globe who saw the need for better representation on our bookshelves.
As the hashtag went viral, we utilized this momentum to raise the funds to turn We Need Diverse Books into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to changing the publishing landscape. Today, WNDB continues to serve diverse creators, publishing workers, educators, students, and readers across the nation.
Financial Transparency
WNDB operates on tenets of transparency and efficiency. We’re committed to providing our supporters and potential donors with the information they need to see how their gifts are utilized.
