Apple hit a new record in India, with annual sales hitting nearly $9 billion in fiscal year 2025 on the back of growing customer demand for its flagship devices. The company is also ramping up its retail footprint in the country.

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple's revenue rose about 13% in the 12 months till March 2025 from $8 billion a year ago, with most of it coming from iPhone sales.

Boost for Apple

These numbers come in at a time when Apple, along with other premium phone makers, is facing a slowdown in mobile device sales around the world. There's also a lot of uncertainty around China, Apple's major customer and manufacturing hub.

Revenue from China grew 4.4% in the April-June quarter, its first rise in two years, with fierce competition from local rivals such as Xiaomi Corp.

According to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple's shipments in India grew by 21.5% annually to 5.9 million units in the first half of 2025, with iPhone 16 being the highest-shipped model across the country during the period.

According to IDC's worldwide quarterly mobile phone tracker, India's smartphone market shipped 70 million smartphones in the first half of 2025, with a 0.9% growth YoY (year-over-year), and the second quarter of the year registered a growth of 7.3% YoY, shipping 37 million smartphones.

Retail footprint

As part of its retail push in India, Apple opened stores in Bengaluru and Pune this week. It is also planning an outlet in Noida and another in Mumbai early next year.

As per India's policy, foreign single-brand retailers like Apple could open company stores only if at least 30% of their products were sourced from within the country. As the policy eased, Apple first launched its online store in India in 2020. CEO Tim Cook then inaugurated the first two stores in India in Mumbai and New Delhi in 2023.

Making in India

India has a growing role in Apple's manufacturing, benefiting from the trade war between the US and China. About one in five iPhones is now made in India. Apple is also expanding production at its five Indian factories to diversify production away from China.

The expansion has happened despite concerns raised by US President Donald Trump, who insisted that Apple build in the US or face tariffs. While smartphones and computers are not currently affected by new US tariffs, Trump has made his opposition clear.

However, reports suggest that Apple has assured the Indian government that it has no intention of slowing down its expansion in India. The company is committing an estimated $2.5 billion to boost iPhone production capacity from over 40 million units annually to around 60 million.

Cook is trying to get back in Trump's good books. He was part of a power-packed cohort of technology executives hosted by the President for dinner at the White House on Thursday.

Under pressure from the Trump administration, Apple has boosted its already hefty investment in the US to $600 billion over the next four years, creating jobs and shifting some work there in the hopes of sidestepping potential import duties.

What's coming

Apple will host its annual fall event on September 9 where it is expected to unveil new iPhones, watches and other devices.

The event will be held at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California and serve as a showcase of the company's efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into its devices. Media reports have said Apple will also unveil a slimmer version of its latest iPhone, possibly branded as the iPhone Air, echoing its iPad Air and MacBook Air lines.
