    VinFast and its India ops

VinFast plans to roll out its first phase of dealerships across a mix of major metro areas and fast-growing EV hubs. Locations include cities such as Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Kochi, Bhubaneswar, Thiruvananthapuram, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Surat, Kozhikode, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Shimla, Agra, Jhansi, Gwalior, Vapi, Vadodara, and Goa.

Helmed by chairman Pham Nhat Vuong, Vingroup is hugely powerful in Vietnam, with business interests spanning healthcare, real estate, education and tech.

VinFast's e-scooters, e-cars and e-buses are ubiquitous in the country of 100 million people.

Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast Auto Ltd. sees its new India factory as key to entering South Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Asia Chief Executive Officer Pham Sanh Chau said, as it begins a $500 million push to crack the world’s third-biggest car market.

The new plant will have an initial production capacity of 50,000 vehicles, which can be ramped up to 150,000 a year, Chau said in an interview with Bloomberg TV’s David Ingles ahead of VinFast’s Tamil Nadu factory inauguration Monday. The factory will focus on premium electric SUV models, the VF 7 and VF 6, the company said in a statement.

The India factory is the company’s third vehicle plant. It has two in Vietnam.VinFast opened its first showroom in Surat, India in late July and it plans to put up 35 dealerships across the country in at least 27 cities by the end of the year.

Though India has made big strides in the EV sector, its electric cars are still at a nascent stage. Electric passenger vehicle retail sales jumped 93 % year-on-year in July, led by Tata Motors, as per the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). India aims to achieve a 30% share of electric vehicles in total vehicle sales by 2030.

As per the Aayog, with 18.78 million EV sales in 2024 or just 7.6% of total vehicle sales, the country needs to accelerate significantly to meet its 2030 targeting which will require an increase of over 22% in the next five years. The overall EV sales bump will of course help electric cars too especially when so many attractive, in terms of looks, efficiency and price, have started flooding the market.
