As everyone who intends to answer this quiz has already answered, I'll post something not many may be aware of. As a young teenager I used to spend most of my paper round earnings on playing snooker at a local club, so familiar with the rules and the possible highest break, which is often stated as 147 by commentators. 15 reds, 15 blacks, followed by the colours. However a situation exists where it's possible to score a break of 155........ how you may ask? Player A breaks off and immediately snookers player B, who misses and the referee calls a miss and a 'free ball'. This means player A can elect any ball, any colour to pot as a red ball (1 point), then proceed to pot the black, followed by the 15 reds, 15 blacks and colours to achieve a potential break of 155. This very rare situation developed recently in March 2026 during the World Open in China, where Ronnie O'Sullivan achieved a break of 153. From the break off, Ronnie snookered his opponent behind the green ball and after four attempts to hit the reds, giving Ronnie 16 penalty points, the referee called a 'free ball'. Ronnie potted the green, followed by the black, then continued to clear the table potting 15 reds, 13 blacks, 2 pinks, then the colours for a world record break off 153. You can watch Ronnies 153 break here; Had Ronnie potted seven blacks, instead of two pinks, he would have scored the maximum break possible of 155.
