Steven Gerrard has added to swirling rumours of a potential return to Rangers by pulling out of an exhibition football match honouring one of his ex-Liverpool team-mates, citing "professional reasons" for his absence. Djibril Cisse disclosed that Gerrard had to back out from his celebratory "jubilee match".

Taking to Instagram, Cisse expressed his sentiments: "Unfortunately, for professional reasons, Steven Gerrard just advised me that he won't be able to grace his presence for my anniversary next Tuesday, May 27. He said: "My disappointment is great but my respect for my captain goes above all. What we lived together in Istanbul 20 years ago, will go above and beyond. Big respect captain @stevengerrard."

Gerrard and Cisse shared the pitch at Liverpool for two seasons after Cisse's high-profile transfer from Auxerre in 2004, a period highlighted by their Champions League triumph in Istanbul.

Since hanging up his boots in 2021, Cisse has rejoined Auxerre, contributing to Christophe Pelissier's coaching team as a striker coach in Ligue 1.

Cisse was gearing up for a "jubilee" match, initially announcing Gerrard's involvement, only to follow up with the news of his withdrawal.

The celebratory fixture is set to feature an Auxerre Legends XI facing off against the Cisse All-Stars. Amidst this backdrop, speculation is rampant that Gerrard is poised for a return to the hotseat at Ibrox.

His withdrawal citing "professional" reasons has sparked intrigue among Rangers fans.

In an emotional revelation on Peter Crouch's podcast in March, the Liverpool legend openly expressed his relief at having stepped out of the pressure cooker.

Gerrard confessed: "I don't want to be back in work mate, no. I'm happy with waking up and being free, doing the family stuff, just being free away from stress."
