Richard A. Davey, Jr. shared thisOne of my favorite traditions at Massport is our annual Intern Ice Cream Social. This year's group is curious, ambitious, and willing to learn. They worked in departments and disciplines from across the organization, from aviation and maritime operations to planning, finance, real estate, and more. A question I often ask young professionals is: Who's in your kitchen cabinet? Success is rarely a solo journey. Who are the mentors, colleagues, and trusted advisors you can turn to when navigating your career? One of the greatest benefits of an internship isn't just the experience you gain, but the relationships you build. The connections made at Massport this summer may become trusted mentors, future colleagues, and lifelong friends. Equally important is being willing to do the same for others along the way. As the interns think about their futures, I also encouraged them to consider a second question: Whose kitchen cabinet will you be in someday? It was a pleasure connecting with this talented group, and I look forward to seeing where their careers take them. The future is bright.

I had the pleasure of traveling to Belfast, Ireland with Massport Board Member Sean O'Brien and Massport colleagues for conversations with Belfast Harbour, Belfast City Airport, Belfast International Airport, Invest Northern Ireland, and government officials focused on infrastructure, transportation, and economic development. What struck me most was how much we have in common. Whether in Belfast or Boston, airports and ports are about more than moving people and goods. They're engines of opportunity, connecting communities, supporting jobs, and strengthening regional economies. I'm grateful to our hosts for their warm welcome and thoughtful exchange of ideas. The best ideas often come from stepping outside your own organization, listening, learning, and bringing new perspectives home.

Davey, Jr. liked thisWith mixed emotions that I am announcing my retirement from the MBTA after 33 years dedicated to Boston's subway mission-critical transportation control system. More than three decades ago, I began working on a system that would become my life's work. I designed, implemented, maintained, and enhanced a platform that has quietly and reliably served Boston's subway operations day after day, year after year — through changing technologies, business requirements, leadership teams, and organizational priorities. Through all of it, one thing stayed constant: uninterrupted service was never optional. The people who depend on public transportation deserved nothing less. I'm proud that the system achieved a level of reliability and flexibility that's increasingly rare in this industry - over 30 years of continuous, uninterrupted service, in a field where downtime is often treated as inevitable. For most of that time, I carried that responsibility with the support and trust of the people around me. Every leader before the last few years treated me with respect as a technical advisor, with an open line of communication and a genuine interest in how this system worked and where it needed to go. Unfortunately, that changed in the last few years. I was disregarded and disrespected — my recommendations went unsought, my experience was treated as expendable rather than essential, and decisions about this system's future were made from a distance and pursued without my input, and in some cases, without my knowledge at all and organizations interest in preserving the system became less important than replacing the people who understood it. I pushed for succession planning and knowledge transfer during this time specifically because I could see where things were headed, but that vision required organizational commitment. Ultimately an organization gets exactly what it chooses to invest in. Expertise is either valued or ignored. Knowledge is either transferred or lost. Risks are either addressed or deferred. Those choices always have consequences. I want to be clear: this is not a story about burnout or a natural end to a long career. When responsibility and authority no longer align, staying stops being sustainable, no matter how much of your life you've put into the work. So I leave with real pride in the countless nights, weekends, emergencies, and upgrades it took to build and sustain a system that many relied on but few outside my direct circle ever fully understood. I did everything in my power, right up until the end, to position this system for a continued future. Whether that groundwork will be properly leveraged is now entirely in the organization's hands. To the coworkers, operators, and engineers who valued this work and valued me enough to ask - thank you. It has been an honor. I wish you all the best moving forward, and I'm grateful for an unforgettable 33-year journey.

My brother and I finally sold our childhood home in Pittsford, New York. Now another family can make its memories. This decade so far has been long. Irretrievable losses and uncertain transitions. Ambitions unfulfilled and hopes enduring. A time for reflection. Our parents were collectors and savers, if nothing else. And they were intensely private — even, or perhaps especially, from their children. We have worked through our parents’ material legacy sorting out the valuable, the memories, and then meanings over the past 2 years. We have found shards of their past amidst the family photos and correspondence back to the 19th century, high school yearbooks going back to the 1910s, our father’s military records from the 1950s, their curated collection of mid-20th century art and Scandinavian furniture, a stunning collection of antique farm implements acquired over 50 years…. But also glimpses into their struggles. Our father’s enthusiastic notes from his initial interviews with Xerox in 1970 to the terse November 1982 reduction in force notice that ended his career too soon. Our mother’s remarkable teaching and consulting notes which helped a generation of readers, balanced against the documents of a prolonged and contentious struggle for tenure. We have a much clearer image of our parents after collecting and assembling these shards. It is fitting our parents came home to overlook their beloved pond. Leaving I noticed a towering male ginkgo tree. When we moved to Pittsford 55 years ago, the tree was a spindling. It hardly grew for years. Each year, my brother and I thought it would be the tree’s last. But it endured. And after we went off to college, later in its life, the tree exploded with growth. I never would have predicted that. The airport's new plug-in hybrid electric street sweeper (2026 Elgin Pelican Plug-in Hybrid Electric (PHEV)) reduces diesel use while supporting operations across a broader service area. This innovative PHEV model significantly reduces diesel consumption during stop-and-go operations and eliminates diesel use entirely when operating in battery-only mode, helping advance Massport's Net Zero goals through fleet electrification and cleaner operations.

Concessions really do improve the passenger experience… and what an opportunity activate underused space and create a new revenue opportunity for the Airport. I am very excited to check off the first piece of this vision with much more ahead for SBN. Next up… Jimmy Johns!
