Would you believe me that it took a Halloween volunteer stint with 8 year olds for me to learn the difference? It was during this tournament that I realized my greatest joy came from coaching the boys in their relationships and interactions. Far more than teaching one of them a skill or lesson. It was helping them sort out miscommunication, or finding the right language that two perspective could both understand. Life gives you feedback every day, in all of your activities. Listen to the little things, pay attention to your body. Your truth has always been there.

Travis Lee Howard shared thisAugust 18, 2018 is when this picture was taken. It's also the day my dad was killed on his motorcycle by a semi-truck. Be honest, you thought the picture happened first. This photo is about 5 hours after I spoke with the Sheriff's Office, and the decisions I made in those hours set the trajectory for the past 8 years. I could have cancelled the Bronco's game, but I wanted to be a good leader. I wanted to be a good dad. I wanted to show him, and even the girls who were still at home with mom, that joy is my priority. That life will take place, but we have the choice in how we respond. I showed them all that grief was real, and they saw me cry, heck they still see me cry when something reminds me of him, but they see me smile when it's done. They know where my focus comes back to, they know what's most important to me. You hopefully won't have to face death as a leader of your business, but your people will see you face tribulations for sure. It's okay to acknowledge them, to feel the feelings, but I encourage you to make sure you show them what matters most to you. How you keep score in life. Those shared experiences will drive culture and will play a major role in you thriving or not.

Travis Lee Howard liked thisTravis Lee Howard liked thisTen years ago this week I walked away from a career that had given me everything I thought I wanted. We all want those things: financial freedom, recognition, and an opportunity to make a difference. The plan was to wind down as I approached my 62nd birthday and spend time pursuing all those activities I had postponed for “retirement”. Once that day arrived, my dear spouse saw me quickly turning my hobbies into a job. My obsession with work had been unhealthily transferred to activities that used to be relaxing. There was nothing to satisfy my need to help and collaborate with others. She knew I was miserable before I did. A few years earlier, I had discovered a book called “Traction” and met a lifelong friend, Walt Brown, who was pursuing a new career as a Professional EOS Implementer. It was Walt who helped diagnose my restlessness and encouraged me to join him and a small (around 130) group of people working with entrepreneurial leaders to help them get what they want from their businesses. I made “the leap” and found myself in an EOS Boot Camp with Kelly Knight led by Mike Paton. I quickly learned that I didn’t know what I didn’t know. A lifetime of business experience had only helped me grow thick callouses of self-preservation, artificial harmony and doing the expedient thing instead of the hard thing or the right thing. Today, the small team I joined is approaching 900 Professional EOS Implementers in the US and a dozen other countries. Over the last 10 years, I have had the privilege to serve 74 companies over nearly 700 session days helping them achieve alignment of their vision and traction against their goals with a healthy, cohesive team. Over the past 10 years, my colleagues, my EOS leaders and especially my wonderful clients have done their best to make me better. Now in my 70s, I’m still a work in progress, but I’ve found boundless joy in this journey. Thanks to all who have touched me and allowed me to have a ringside seat to witness your growth and transformation. My EOS Life is better than I could have possibly imagined. I don’t know if I’ll ever have a traditional “retirement”, but if this is it, I’ll be satisfied. #ProgressNotPerfection #EOSimplementer #EOSWorldwide

I’ve been thinking about that since reading a recent The Wall Street Journal article about what is happening in Florida as thousands of Haitian workers lose their work authorization. Two home-care agencies in South Florida shut down after each lost more than 80 workers. WSJ also recently made a survey asking us, the 11 million Americans who take care of their kids while also taking care of aging parents, about our biggest challenges and stressors. This is not about politics. After spending most of my life in healthcare and as someone whose mother lives in an assisted living facility, I worry about the unintended consequences for our elderly. The alarm bells are ringing. We don't have enough caregivers as is. The Silver Tsunami is already here; people are living longer, and more families want their loved ones cared for at home. When an experienced caregiver disappears, it’s not so easy just to hire another person and call it solved. Patients and families lose someone they know and trust, sometimes someone who has been caring for them for years. For those of us in healthcare, how can we attract, train, and retain enough skilled caregivers who put patients first to meet the patient demand?
