The other 𝟵𝟱%? That’s the infrastructure required to make it reliable, safe, and cost-effective in production. I recently watched a fantastic session by Ashok Prakash (Staff Engineer at Apple, formerly Oracle AI) at the Optimized AI Conference. Prakash nailed the challenge of moving from "𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼" 𝘁𝗼 "𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻" by focusing on an 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲-𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀t approach to 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. Here are my top takeaways and a visual breakdown of the reference stack he proposed: 🚀 𝟭. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: Agents shouldn't just run; they need to "live" in a durable execution environment. Using tools like Temporal or Celery allows for crucial checkpointing and rollback mechanisms. Every step the agent takes should be visible and manageable, not a black box. 🛡️ 𝟮. 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝘀 "𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀": Never give an agent unfettered access. All tools, databases, and APIs must operate under a specific contract. This defines the hard boundaries of what the agent is authorized to do, preventing malicious or unintended actions before they happen. 📜 𝟯. 𝗗𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 "𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲" (𝗢𝗣𝗔): Prakash made an important argument against relying solely on ambiguous English prompts for system governance. Instead, he advocates for using Open Policy Agent (OPA) to implement 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲. This creates structured, non-ambiguous rules that the agent can validate its actions against before execution. I’ve put together this architecture diagram illustrating how these key pillars (Durable Controller, vLLM Optimization, and the OPA Policy Engine) must integrate to create a "𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽" of safe action. Joseph Kurian (IIT Kharagpur, Chemical Engineering, Class of 1959) It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our esteemed alumnus in the Greater Toronto Area, Dr. C. Joseph Kurian, IIT Kharagpur, Chemical Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Class of 1959. On behalf of IIT Alumni Canada (IITAC), we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates, colleagues, and loved ones. May they find strength and comfort in the cherished memories they shared with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. After 93 remarkable years, Dr. Joseph passed away peacefully on August 26, 2026. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Dr. Joseph was born on August 8, 1933, in Kerala, India, the only son of Joseph and Elizabeth and the brother of Thankamma and Hanne. Raised in Pallom, Kerala, he pursued his studies at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur before undertaking postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania and later at the University of Toronto. Dr. Joseph had a deep and enduring passion for research and learning. Throughout his distinguished life, he received numerous honours and awards, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Kharagpur & IIT Alumni Canada. In 1964, Dr. Joseph married Kuttimol Ancheril. Together, they raised three children and built a life grounded in faith, love, family, and service. Their shared entrepreneurial spirit led them to establish Alpha Laboratories in 1971. Dr. Joseph was deeply grateful for his family and friends, as well as for his extended “Alpha Family,” who became an important part of his life. Over nearly a century, Dr. Joseph witnessed extraordinary changes in the world and sought to make a positive difference through his contributions to charitable causes, community initiatives, and the lives of individuals around him. He was also actively engaged in civic and political life, viewing participation as an important responsibility. Dr. Joseph will be remembered for his infectious laughter, inquisitive mind, vibrant spirit, and adventurous nature. His legacy lives on through his family, friends, colleagues, students, and the many people whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Canadian Red Cross would be appreciated. Visitation Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. CARM Registration & CBN Allotment: What Non-Resident Canadian Businesses Must Know Expanding into Canada offers incredible opportunities, but non-resident businesses must navigate critical compliance steps before they can operate seamlessly. Two of the most important are CARM registration and CBN allotment. 🔹 What is CARM? CARM (CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management) is the Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) new digital platform for managing duties and taxes. All importers — including non-resident businesses — must register for a CARM Client Portal (CCP) account. This registration ensures that your business can: · Pay duties and taxes electronically · Access real-time transaction data · Assign and manage customs brokers · Stay compliant with Canadian import regulations 🔹 What is a CBN? The Canada Business Number (CBN) is a unique identifier issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Non-resident businesses must obtain a CBN before importing goods or providing certain taxable services in Canada. A CBN is also required to register for GST/HST accounts, payroll accounts, and to interact with multiple government agencies. 🔹 Why This Matters for Non-Resident Businesses Without CARM registration and a valid CBN, non-resident companies cannot legally import goods or clear shipments in Canada.
