Ahead of meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump dents Ukraine's NATO hopes

    Synopsis

Donald Trump has reaffirmed his stance against Ukraine's NATO membership, just before President Zelenskyy's visit to Washington. Trump suggested Zelenskyy could end the war quickly but also has the choice to keep fighting. He recalled the annexation of Crimea under Obama and reiterated his opposition to Ukraine joining NATO, emphasizing that some things remain constant.

Donald Trump has reiterated that Ukraine will not be allowed entry into the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), ahead of President Zelenskyy’s scheduled meeting with the US President in Washington on Monday.

In a post on his platform Truth Social, Trump wrote that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could end the war “almost immediately” if he chose to, but also has the option to continue fighting.

Trump added, “Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!”

The discussion follows Trump’s recent Alaska Summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which failed to produce any breakthroughs toward ending the long-running war between Russia and Ukraine.

Prior to the Republican leader returning to the White House a second time, NATO countries had agreed to chart out an "irreversible path" for Kyiv to join the defence alliance.
