But, viewers in North America are not that lucky. They will have to wait until next year, on March 3, 2026, for the lunar phenomenon to be visible. Most of North and South America will miss out entirely as they will be on the sunlit side of the planet during the event.
However, several countries will be able to view the event on September 7-8 and it will last for 5 hours 7 minutes, Space.com reported. Total lunar eclipses are often called "blood moons" because of the moon's tendency to turn crimson when it is hidden by Earth's shadow.

Which countries can view total lunar eclipse?
These regions will be able to see some parts of the blood lunar eclipse: Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, western parts of North America (Alaska), eastern parts of South America, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic and Antarctica, according TimeandDate.com.A rare total lunar eclipse “blood moon” will be visible from the UK on Sunday night for the first time since 2022. While the full eclipse starts at 18:30 and lasts until 19:52, people in the UK will only be able to see it when the Moon rises, and that depends on your location in the United Kingdom.
The eclipse will be visible at about 7.30 pm on Sunday when skies are clear. The Met Office has recommended people, keen to see the celestial event, plan to be somewhere with as clear a view of the eastern horizon as possible, ready for the lunar eclipse to peak in the UK at 7.33pm. According to NASA, the Earth lines up between the Moon and the Sun, hiding the Moon from sunlight during a total lunar eclipse. When this happens, the only light that reaches the Moon’s surface is from the edges of the Earth’s atmosphere.
The air molecules from Earth’s atmosphere scatter out most of the blue light. The remaining light reflects onto the Moon’s surface with a red glow, making the Moon appear red in the night sky.

At the center of Earth's darkest shadow, known as the umbra, the entire surface of the moon will be covered.
According to NASA, it takes roughly 5½ hours for Earth to move in front of the moon, during which the moon passes through both the outer, lighter shadow called the penumbra and the deeper, central shadow, the umbra. The total phase, when the moon is completely covered by Earth's shadow, is expected to last for 83 minutes.
When is the next lunar eclipse?
While North America missed out on this total lunar eclipse, there will be another chance next year. Our astronomical alignments are about to get better in the coming years. From 2025 to 2030, there will be 13 lunar eclipses; of those, eight will be visible in the United States, according to NASA.(Catch all the Business News, Breaking News, Budget 2025 Events and Latest News Updates on The Economic Times.)
