Hurricane Erin beach closures: What was supposed to be a peaceful, sunny retreat for former Secretary of State Antony Blinken became an unexpectedly brief beach outing this week, after he was asked to leave a beach in East Hampton, which was closed as part of Hurricane Erin safety measures, as per a report.

Blinken’s East Hampton beach visit cut short due to storm safety rules

The 63-year-old former diplomat was spotted on Thursday afternoon soaking up the sun on Georgica Beach in the posh Long Island, enjoying the sand and beach with a friend, until local beach patrol swooped down, reminding him of beach closures caused by the approaching storm, as reported by Daily Mail.

Without wasting much time, Blinken immediately folded up his items, taking his beach chair, cooler, and tote bag, and departed from the beach, according to the report.

The temporary disruption occurred during statewide advisories that asked people to avoid the beaches as a result of potentially hazardous conditions brought by Hurricane Erin, as per the Daily Mail report.

The storm, which had threatened the East Coast, led to closures of coastal entrances along New York beaches and the water due to high levels and rip currents, according to the report.

Hurricane Erin weakens but still brings dangerous coastal conditions

It was forecast that the storm could cause possible coastal flooding into the weekend along the East Coast but was also expected to gradually lose strength, as reported by Daily Mail.

However, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said early on Friday that Erin had weakened to a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, according to the report. The storm had moved to around 425 miles south-southwest of Halifax, Novia Scotia, after reportedly having threaded the needle between the East Coast and several islands, as per the Daily Mail report.

Many oceanside beaches along Cape Cod´s National Seashore was also closed for swimmers and other recreation because of the high surf and rip currents, as per Daily Mail.

Beaches were also closed for swimming on Thursday in New York City, but over a dozen surfers still rode waves at Rockaway Beach in Queens, as per the report.
