The boat was uncovered in 1986 when a severe drought made the shoreline of the Sea of Galilee near Magdala to recede, revealing the centuries-old remains. Soon after, rain returned after the discovery, accompanied by a double rainbow, a scene some observers connected to the Gospel tales of divine intervention.
Amateur archaeologists brothers Moshe and Yuval Lufan from Kibbutz Ginnosar first spotted the boat. Understanding its historical value, they informed it to the Israel Antiquities Authority, which rapidly arranged for a careful excavation. Over 12 meticulous days, specialists removed the fragile vessel from the mud, preserving its form. To ensure its safe transport, the boat was encased in fiberglass and foam before being showcased at the Yigal Allon Museum in Kibbutz Ginosar, where visitors can study this remarkable piece of history.
Biblical archaeology expert Danny Herman said to the Daily Mail: “It's a 2,000-year-old boat from the Sea of Galilee, the type mentioned in the Gospels, and sized for about 12 people.” Carbon-14 dating and maritime analysis claimed its Roman-era construction, firmly positioning the boat in the first century. Archaeologist Dr. Kurt Raveh cited that, “you can't ever prove that Jesus was on it or even saw it; about 600 boats were working on this lake at the time.”
The Jesus Boat measures nearly 8.3 meters (27 feet) in length, 2.3 meters (7.5 feet) in width, and 1.3 meters (4.3 feet) in height. Constructed from ten types of wood, that includes cedar, the boat shows the resourcefulness of its builders, using recycled or different materials due to availability issues . Its flat bottom design made it useful for shallow waters, and the boat could accommodate up to 15 people. Equipped with both oars and a mast, it was suitable for rowing and sailing, a unique design typical of fishing boats from that era.
Archaeologists also uncovered a cooking pot and an oil lamp near the boat, showing that its occupants undertook night journeys. Herman cited, “The oil lamp found near the boat suggests it was used for a night journey, just like the Gospel story of Jesus calming the sea,” noting that the artifact is buried in the same silt layer as the boat.
Excavation and preservation of 'Jesus Boat'
Archaeologist Shelley Wachsmann, who assisted with the recovery, explained the excavation as a “delicate process,” important to ensuring the boat’s survival. Preservation took 16 years, during which mud was replaced with a transparent chemical solution to obstruct decay while allowing public display.Since 2000, the Jesus Boat has been exhibited at the Yigal Allon Museum in Ginosar, drawing the attention of Christian pilgrims, history enthusiasts, and visitors globally. Herman said, “It's not just an archaeological find; it's tied to the most famous story of Jesus on the lake. While I can't prove it's the boat, it's certainly the type used in that story.”
Biblical Connection
The boat’s discovery evokes a biblical account of Jesus walking on water, recounted in Matthew 14:22-33, Mark 6:45-52, and John 6:16-21. In the story, after feeding 5,000 people, Jesus sends his disciples across the Sea of Galilee. A storm arises, and the disciples struggle against wind and Jesus approaches them, walking through the water. Frightened by the storm Jesus said, “Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.”Peter made attempts to walk toward him but began to sink, prompting Jesus to say, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” The disciples then climb into the boat, the storm subsides, and they reach Gennesaret, near where this very ancient boat was discovered thousands of years later.FAQs:
