Kamala Harris Secret Service protection: US President Donald Trump has decided to end Secret Service protection for former US vice president Kamala Harris, as per a report.

Why Did Donald Trump End Kamala Harris’s Secret Service Protection?

Under federal law, former vice presidents receive six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office, which for Harris ended on July 21, according to CNN. However, then-president Joe Biden quietly extended her protection for an additional year shortly before leaving office, a move that was not publicly disclosed until now, as per the report.

Trump’s letter, dated Thursday and addressed to the Secretary of Homeland Security, cancels that extension effective September 1, 2025, according to CNN.

The letter states that, “You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” as quoted in the report.

As Trump has revoked her potection, she will no longer have the agents assigned to guard her in person, 24/7 Secret Service protection that included constant analysis of threat intelligence and covering in-person situations, emails, texts and social media, as per CNN.

Harris’s senior adviser, Kirsten Allen, said that, “The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” as quoted in the report.

Kamala Harris Set to Begin Public Book Tour Without Federal Protection

This move comes just as Harris, a Los Angeles resident, prepares to launch a multi-city book tour to promote her memoir, '107 Days', which is scheduled for release on September 23, as per the report. The tour will bring her back into the public eye more than she has been since leaving office, during which she has kept a relatively low profile, according to CNN.

Trump Previously Revoked Protection for Others

Earlier this year, the US president also terminated the federal security protection for others, including those who have criticized him like former national security adviser John Bolton and in March, he ended protection for Biden's children Hunter Biden and Ashley Bide, according to Reuters report.

Local Officials Voice Concern Over Harris’s Safety

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said, “This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearances and more. This puts the former Vice President in danger and I look forward to working with the Governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles,” as quoted by CNN.
