What we know about Shane Tamura, the alleged gunman now dead in NYC shooting
Synopsis
A deadly shooting on Manhattan's Park Avenue claimed four lives, including an NYPD officer, before the gunman fatally shot himself. Authorities identified the shooter as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas. Tamura, armed with an AR-15-style rifle, opened fire inside a building housing corporate offices. While a motive remains unclear, speculation links it to Tamura's alleged NFL aspirations.
Who is Shane Tamura?
Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old reportedly from Las Vegas, has been tentatively identified as the suspect behind Monday evening’s mass shooting at a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper.
According to multiple reports, Tamura opened fire inside the building at 345 Park Avenue, which houses corporate offices of Blackstone, the NFL, and KPMG, killing at least four people before being found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor.
While authorities have yet to release a full official profile, unconfirmed reports suggest Tamura was a former football player who graduated high school in 2016 and played as a standout running back at Granada Hills.
He reportedly held a concealed firearms permit issued by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 2022, which was valid for two years. The weapon used in the attack was identified as a .223-caliber AR-15-style rifle made by Palmetto State Armory, retailing for around $420.
Some speculative reports circulating on social media have pointed to Tamura’s alleged disappointment over not making it to the NFL as a potential motive, given that the building houses NFL headquarters.
However, these claims remain unverified, and police have not commented on any motive at this time.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to avoid the area around Park Avenue and East 51st Street, as emergency services responded to the active scene.
“New Yorkers: there is an active shooter investigation taking place in midtown right now,” Adams wrote in a X post. “Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.”
