CPO briefs tend to follow a predictable pattern — transformation is on the agenda, but the hiring focus is weighted on security and risk mitigation, whether via previous PE experience or sector expertise. This perhaps reflects a limited understanding of how transferable HR skills can be. So unsurprisingly, most surveyed CPOs bring both PE and sector experience to the table.Hugo Tucker shared thisPrivate Equity and the CPO hire We recently surveyed c. 200 Chief People Officers in PE-backed businesses. We questioned them on their prior experience, interview process, candidate experience, as well as key ways in which they prepare to succeed in a PE-backed business. The purpose of our survey was to gain insight into the hiring process to: a) Share best practice with our PE clients to secure top CPO talent. b) Advise candidates on how best to prepare for the process and succeed once appointed. So we redesigned it. 1,800 HR professionals. 57 countries. 250 operating companies. One model that didn’t yet exist. By the time the model was taking shape, the assessment came back: only 35% of the HR population would fit it. That left one decision. MAJOR UK EMPLOYMENT LAW CHANGES COMING IN 2026 The employment landscape is shifting significantly next year. If you're hiring or managing teams, these changes will fundamentally alter your approach to recruitment. WHAT'S CHANGING FROM DAY ONE OF EMPLOYMENT: 🚨 UNFAIR DISMISSAL PROTECTION - The two-year qualifying period disappears. Employees can bring claims immediately, though a statutory probation period (likely 9 months) will provide some protection. 🤒 STATUTORY SICK PAY - No more waiting periods or earnings thresholds. An employee could call in sick on day one and qualify for SSP. 👶 PARENTAL RIGHTS - Maternity, paternity, and shared parental leave rights apply from the first day of employment. 💔 BEREAVEMENT LEAVE - A new statutory right (expected to be at least one week) for all employees regardless of service length. STILL UNDER CONSULTATION: Restrictions on zero-hours contracts Right to disconnect legislation Enhanced holiday pay for irregular workers WHAT THIS MEANS FOR EMPLOYERS The traditional "let's see how they get on" approach becomes a luxury you can't afford. Your hiring decisions now carry immediate legal weight.
