A proud Naomi Osaka said she was 'sickened' to see Taylor Townsend claim more silverware by coming runner-up in the US Open women's doubles final. The 29-year-old American took home the second-placed prize in Flushing Meadows alongside partner Katerina Siniakova.

The No. 1-seeded pair eased through the tournament to set up a showpiece clash against Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe last Friday, not dropping a single set. However, the duo who won the 2024 Wimbledon and 2025 Australian Open women's doubles titles couldn't add a third rung to their ladder, being defeated 6-4, 6-4. Osaka, who enjoyed a stellar women's singles run in New York, reaching the semi-final only to be beaten two sets to one by Amanda Anisimova, took to social media after Townsend's final to sing her praises.

"Your hardware collection grows every tournament, it's sickening," commented Osaka on Townsend's post-final celebratory image, accompanied by a host of positive and proud emojis.

Townsend was asked about this tournament after reaching the showpiece at Arthur Ashe Stadium and claimed that the Grand Slam has been revolutionary for her in both the singles and doubles competitions.

"This has been a huge, monumental tournament for me. It's really changed my life, and no matter the result, I feel like I've already won," admitted Townsend, reflecting on her US Open runs.

"I think the biggest thing that has changed for me is just being able to truly show up as myself publicly and for people to be able to receive that as it is. Not feeling like I have to hide or be something that I'm not, and really just living in my truth. It's very liberating and freeing. For me, it's been fun."

However, this competition has also seen Townsend surrounded by controversy. During the second round of the women's singles, the 29-year-old beat Latvian former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1, but was on the receiving end of a tirade after the match concluded.

Ostapenko accused Townsend of having "no class" and "no education" after she claimed the American did not apologise when a net cord landed in her favour. Osaka commented on this fiery altercation, and Ostapenko later issued an apology.

"I think obviously it's one of the worst things you can say to a black tennis player in a majority white sport," said the four-time Grand Slam-winning Japanese star. "I know Taylor and I know how hard she's worked and I know how smart she is, so she's the furthest thing from uneducated or anything like that.

"If you're genuinely asking me about the history of Ostapenko, I don't think that's the craziest thing she's said. I'm going to be honest. I think it's ill-timing and the worst person you could have ever said it to. And I don't know if she knows the history of it in America. But I know she's never going to say that ever again in her life. It was just terrible."
