Patrick Murphy shared thisInteresting report from E3 on the relationship between data center growth and rising electricity rates. One takeaway I found important: the report doesn’t argue that load growth has zero impact. It argues that retail electricity prices are shaped by a much broader mix of factors — including fuel volatility, transmission investment, market design, wildfire mitigation, regulatory lag, and generation retirements. It also highlights how rapidly utilities and regulators are evolving large-load tariff structures to reduce stranded-cost and cross-subsidy risk. Worth reading whether you agree with all of the conclusions or not. The AI infrastructure buildout is forcing a much more serious conversation around power markets, planning, and cost allocation.Patrick Murphy shared thisData centers are getting blamed for rising electricity bills. The data says otherwise. A comprehensive new independent study from Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc. (E3), analyzing more than 10 quantitative studies, finds no historical evidence that data centers have driven cost increases for other utility customers. In several cases, they've done the opposite. The five actual drivers of rising rates: ▪️ Inflation ▪️ Natural gas price volatility ▪️ Aging grid infrastructure ▪️ Wildfire mitigation costs ▪️ Wholesale market design failures that predate the AI buildout by decades Texas and Virginia, the states with the most data center growth, have the smallest rate increases in the country. California and New York, the states with the biggest rate increases, saw load decline. E3's analysis of data center facilities across four utility territories found each site generated an average of $3.4 million in net surplus revenue. That's money that flows back to reduce rates for everyone else on the grid. The real challenge isn't too much demand. It's infrastructure that hasn't kept pace with a 21st-century economy. HERE'S HOW... 👇 (cool story!) 👇🥹 Friday night was ‘guys night’ after I was in Florida all week for work. We cooked dinner together and then my son Solomon and I opened a MacBook at the kitchen table. He was skeptical that we could build anything useful with AI. The kids today hate AI slop. We joked about things but then.. The joke became the product. 🤘 Ninety minutes later, we had launched IMSMART.ONG, an AI-powered study app. It stands for "I'm Smart - On God!" His classmates were already using it. Full flash cards, study guides, file upload and analysis, 20+ LLM’s he could use… all built on dad’s work platform (they call it Cloudflare) in minutes. 🔥 Solomon decided what the product should do and tested every feature. I worked the prompts and helped turn his ideas into code. At one point, he looked at me and said: "AI is an unfair advantage." 💯 WE WERE BUILDING AND SHIPPING CODE! The first version cost us $12.24, excluding the domain. We even did more updates last night! But the best thing we built wasn't the open source software…. (Yeah, we released it on Gitlab under the MIT license) It was confidence. Curiosity. Time together. And the realization that a good idea doesn't have to stay an idea. 💡 Parents, ask your child what they would build if technology were no longer the barrier. Instead of hunting for another corporate life raft, I gave them back my redundancy money and bought their loss-making German division. I didn't speak German. But market shifts don't need a translator. Six brilliant engineers were facing the chop with me. Day 1, I handed every one of them equity: → If the ship sank, we owned the wreckage together → If we turned the engines round, everyone ate at the top table For two years, we grafted like an F1 pit crew in the dark. We turned their discarded division into a high-performance machine. Then we sold it for $17,000,000. Six paydays for six loyal families. When the corporate rug is pulled from under your feet, you don't wait for permission to stand up. You build your own ladder. It is a term for golf when you score 3 under par on a single hole. An albatross is 480 times more rare than even a hole-in-one, which I have been lucky enough to have one once. Still pin hunting. An albatross can only happen on a Par 5 hole, and the golfer is able to hit the ball in the hole on their second shot. I witnessed this at Bass River Golf course on July 26th. I was playing golf with 3 people I just met, teeing off at 6:50am. My round was immediately doomed, birdying the first hole. IYKYK. Had a pretty good round overall. What made this day special and one I will never forget is what someone else did. Someone I had never met. His name was Patrick. He was a pretty good golfer, better than me. On the 3rd hole, a short Par 5 he hit a 310 yard tee shot 20 yards off the fairway in the rough. BTW, about 100 yards further than I hit a good drive. That’s why I play from the whites. It’s all about the short game. His next shot was one for the history books. 146 yards out it went in the freaking hole. A score of 2 on a par 5. Patrick immediately went sprinting to the hole to confirm it went in the hole as we all waited to hit our next shots. Just wow. I’ve only heard of one other person doing it, never mind witnessing it. The odds of an amateur achieving this feat. 1 in 6 million. Patrick plans to play the lottery.

Patrick Murphy liked thisPatrick Murphy liked thisToday was bittersweet.... I walked out of the Compass Datacenters' global headquarters for the last time as a Vertiv employee. That building has been my base for the past two and a half years, and boy, what a run it has been.... This was never a typical vendor and customer relationship. It was a real partnership. We brainstormed together, solved problems together, and innovated together. Some of the best ideas were first sketched on a paper napkin! (Yupp!!) Timelines matter in every project environment. In the data center business, they are on steroids. I learned more in that time than I could have almost anywhere else, and that credit belongs to the people around me. So many of you helped me along the way, and you know exactly who you are :) Some names I do want to mention: Chris Crosby, CEO of Compass Datacenters. An absolute gentleman, still carrying founder's energy years after building this place from a startup into a well-respected name in the hyperscale world. (Spoiler alert: I did manage to ask him who his favorite James Bond is. Sean Connery. Obviously.) Sudhir Kalra, EVP and Chief Advisor at Compass Datacenters. One of the best mentors I have had. The world needs more leaders, and even more than that, it needs more mentors like you! Special thanks to Tim McGinty, Michael Murphy, Michelle Almeida, CPA, Catalina Badina, Jeri Baker, ARM, Machel Jaynes and Jason Dingess for making me feel at home there. And to my super talented Vertiv team, thank you for the trust and the great times together. Onward. Excited for the next chapter :)

Patrick Murphy liked thisPatrick Murphy liked this🚨 BREAKING: NVIDIA is reportedly acquiring Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. This comes just days after reports that Hugging Face was exploring a sale after receiving acquisition interest and bringing in a bank to evaluate potential offers. Hugging Face is growing fast. Its annualized revenue reportedly jumped from around $100 million to more than $150 million within a few months, paying subscribers doubled in the first half of 2026, and the company says it is close to profitability. That put Hugging Face in a strong position to consider a sale while interest from major buyers was already there. For NVIDIA, the strategic fit is pretty clear. Hugging Face has become one of the most important platforms in open-source AI, where millions of developers discover, download, fine-tune, and deploy models. A lot of that activity eventually turns into demand for compute, where NVIDIA already dominates. It also gives NVIDIA a stronger position in the open-model ecosystem at a time when major AI companies are increasingly developing their own chips and trying to reduce dependence on NVIDIA. If the deal closes, NVIDIA would own one of the biggest platforms sitting between AI developers, models, and the hardware underneath them. Follow Endrit Restelica for more.

Patrick Murphy liked thisPatrick Murphy liked thisThe data center development playbook has changed dramatically in recent years: speed to power has become the single biggest determinant of whether a project gets built and how quickly it can start operating. The reality is, no amount of capital, land, or connectivity compensates for a five-year interconnection queue — and that requires a fundamental change in how our industry shows up. Data center providers need to: - Enter markets with genuine development intent - Treat utilities as partners - Invest in energy solutions that benefit both the project and the grid - Ultimately, show up in communities as long-term partners We’ve seen what this can look like in practice. In Hillsboro, when Portland General Electric identified a peaking problem that would have delayed our facility by years, we chose to collaborate rather than wait. The result was a battery energy storage system that provides the power we need while improving utility efficiency for the entire community. We’re pursuing the same logic with Project Caprock in Texas, where we’re funding our energy costs and the dedicated electrical infrastructure required to power the campus, helping ensure those costs aren’t passed on to local ratepayers. The way I see it, the long game is the only game. When you’re committed to a community for decades, you make better decisions at every turn, and those choices earn you the ability to build. If your telecom partner is pushing one provider for everything, run. There's a reason real operators never lock clients to a single carrier. No one network is perfect. Not for security. Not for cost. Not for uptime. When someone recommends just one provider, here's what they're really saying: They either don't understand your business, Or they're getting paid extra to limit your options. All-in-one sounds safe, but it's a trap. You miss redundancy. You lose leverage. Your outages last longer. And you pay more, because you can't negotiate. Smart IT leaders know better. They mix carriers for resilience, better pricing, and actual business continuity. Anyone telling you otherwise isn't there for you. They're there for themselves. Stop making vendors rich. The "Last Mile" in Texas isn't on the ground. It’s 550km up. The definition of "broadband infrastructure" is officially changing. According to Texas Standard, Starlink is now poised to become the largest provider of federally supported broadband in underserved parts of Texas under the BEAD program. But there is a catch: SpaceX is actively pushing back on the federal pricing and coverage requirements attached to that funding. The Friction Point: The Shift: Federal rules were recently updated to allow satellite providers to compete for BEAD funding, acknowledging that fiber simply cannot reach every ranch and rural community in Texas economically. The Sticking Point: Government programs are designed around "utility-style" regulations (fixed pricing, guaranteed 100% coverage). LEO networks operate on dynamic capacity and global pricing models. The Stakes: If Texas and SpaceX can find a middle ground, it establishes the precedent for how the rest of the $42 billion BEAD fund gets deployed across the US. My Take: Texas is the perfect testbed for this. We are watching the collision of "Old Telecom Policy" (which assumes cables) and "New Space Reality" (which assumes beams). The regulators want the stability of fiber; the market needs the ubiquity of satellite. The winner of this negotiation will dictate the speed of digital inclusion for the next decade. In my view, flexibility is the only way forward.
