Two weeks ago, we launched the Global News Gaps Project at the 76th World News Media Congress in Krakow. The initiative is focused on deepening understanding of emerging news providers and elevating our engagement with those reporting on news gaps. Near the end of last year, in a prior post, I mentioned that this challenge was top of mind going into 2025. Whether it’s a digital news startup or a journalist operating on a social media platform, "emerging news providers" are playing a growing role in helping people stay informed and make sense of the news. Crucially, many are covering under-reported topics and communities, sometimes referred to as "news gaps". However, with so many new entrants, it can be difficult to distinguish those that are producing helpful, credible news information. This makes it more challenging for the broader ecosystem to offer these emerging news providers with the support they need as they look to grow. Over the last few months, we’ve been working with multiple partners to develop the Global News Gaps Project, addressing that challenge across 3 phases: 📜 Research: We’re excited to support the News Creators Project, a research effort led by FT Strategies - and supported by WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers- to deepen understanding of news creators. Convening a global external advisory board of experts from multiple disciplines, the project will identify drivers of success for news creators, produce a diagnostic to help news creators guide their growth, and be used to inform mapping in Project Oasis. 🗺️ Mapping: We’re strengthening support of Project Oasis, spearheaded by SembraMedia, growing the global directory of independent digital native news organizations to 5K+ profiles before the end of the year. Concurrently, we’ve brought Storyful to the effort to add 1K+ news creators to the Project Oasis directory, informed by the work of the News Creators Project. 🏗️ Enablement: We’ll deepen our support for emerging news providers focused on news gaps. 300 will be selected to receive strategic consultations to guide their long-term growth and trainings on relevant Google products. 150 of these will receive funding, WAN-IFRA membership, and additional support throughout the year.
