As the nation gears up to celebrate Independence Day, several regions across India are bracing for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, raising concerns over travel disruptions and outdoor events. In view of persistent rain and adverse weather conditions, all government and private schools from Classes 1 to 12 will remain closed in Lucknow today, District Magistrate Visakh G Iyer announced on Thursday.

The closure coincides with a broader spell of monsoon activity affecting multiple states, potentially impacting travel plans for the upcoming long weekend.

Meanwhile, parts of the national capital woke up to fresh rain on Thursday morning, bringing relief from the summer heat and adding a festive coolness to the air. Areas such as India Gate, Kartavya Path, Lajpat Nagar, and neighbouring Noida saw light to moderate showers under an overcast sky.

Forecast data from AQI.in predicts an intensification of rainfall from August 14, with an 84% chance of moderate rain today (8.32 mm expected). Independence Day (August 15) and the following day are likely to witness heavier rainfall – 15.58 mm and 10.34 mm respectively – accompanied by high humidity levels, peaking at 80% on August 17.

The wet spell will persist through August 17 before gradually easing by August 19, which is expected to be the most favourable day for outdoor activities. However, intermittent showers could still impact traffic and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas.
