Jay Komuda shared thisThe familiar playbook assumes disruption has an end state: mobilise teams, accelerate adoption, then stabilise. AI has broken that logic. New capabilities, cheaper models and shifting competitive baselines arrive before the last change has embedded. The risk is no longer simply moving too slowly. It is exhausting good people with an endless cycle of pilots, mandates and resets. MIT Sloan Management Review makes the more useful case: build for steady-state disruption. That means permanent AI infrastructure rather than temporary task forces, different cadences for experimentation and core operations, and learning embedded into how work gets done. The leadership challenge is not to keep every team in sprint mode. It is to create an organisation that can keep adapting without losing judgement, coherence or energy. Last Thursday, Grab Mosaic won Silver at the Effie Awards Singapore 2026, in the New Product, Service or Business category. 🥈 The Effies are the marketing industry's effectiveness awards. The room was full of the region's biggest campaigns. And there we were, a small design team with a product we built ourselves. Mosaic is Grab's internal AI media platform. We trained it on Grab's own visual identity, so anyone in the company can create on-brand images and videos in seconds. Since late 2024 it has produced over 1 million generations for more than 5,800 Grabbers across Marketing, Ops, Support, Product and Design. I had the privilege of leading the taskforce that built it, from the product itself to more rounds of model fine-tuning than I can count. A crew of designers, illustrators and UX engineers shipped this on top of their day jobs. Jay Komuda shared thisMost companies optimize for quarterly delivery but lack a repeatable system for sensing changes ten or twenty years ahead. IDEO proposes a four-stage model for a futurist-in-residence: explore signals, translate them into strategy, build shared practices, then catalyze a self-sustaining capability. The useful provocation is that the role should eventually make itself unnecessary. Product managers, finance teams, HR, and frontline employees should all contribute signals and stress-test assumptions. The executive implication is to operationalize foresight: put emerging signals into leadership rhythms, test future assumptions in investment proposals, and evaluate concepts against several plausible scenarios. Jay Komuda shared thisAI can now generate a working feature faster than a team can determine whether it is useful, usable, trustworthy or coherent. That inversion creates UX debt: plausible prototypes bypass research, ship unnecessary complexity and return later as confusion, abandonment, support demand and reputational damage. The custodial model gives UX three forms of leverage-build shared judgment about what deserves to exist, match evaluation speed to product risk, and encode vetted patterns, accessibility rules and content standards into generation itself. The executive decision is not AI speed versus design rigor. It is whether governance moves upstream quickly enough that cheaper production does not multiply weak decisions. The emerging leadership failure is demanding reinvention while stripping away the stability, belonging, and participation employees need to absorb change. Examples from Microsoft, Netflix, and Patagonia show that durable culture shifts are behavioral systems, not communication campaigns: growth mindset, autonomy with accountability, and purpose embedded in operating choices. Conscious disruption balances urgency with psychological continuity and invites people to shape the transition rather than endure it. For executive teams, resistance should be read as diagnostic data about uncertainty, exclusion, or lost identity—not dismissed as an innovation deficit. Leadership teams can rigorously test market assumptions and financial trade-offs yet still fail when the people expected to execute lack clarity, capacity, skills, or confidence. The pre-launch discipline is to treat execution conditions as a board-level risk: map decision rights, identify capability gaps, surface conflicting priorities, and establish feedback loops before commitments harden. For product and design leaders, this means validating whether teams can translate a strategic choice into coherent customer experiences across functions - not merely whether the roadmap is compelling. Our speakers explored the meta question: In the AI Age, how do humans and AI fit together? We had 3 great talks, followed by fishbowl style discussion. Drawing on the history of textile manufacturing electrification, he delved into the questions: - What are the implications of AI for organisations and design? - What can design do about technology and AI? “This is not just the worst of times but actually the best of times as well - what took ages, can be done in a matter of days" “What is actually not so cheap now is stuff that designers, product people are already doing - figuring out what to build, why we should be building stuff” Isaac Timothy Tay, VP of Product ShopBack Isaac shared the learnings from how AI has impacted product, especially in ShopBack: how previously distinct roles like product management, design, data analytics are converging with AI; He looked at how the role of the product manager is evolving, and what the next generation of builders may look like. ShopBack’s alternative to the forward deployed engineer: allowing existing domain experts to build their own domain tools. “... domain experts will be the ones who ship . . . you empower them to ship safely and quickly…The domain expert becomes the maker."
