If you were lucky enough to have visited Canter Bros. Delicatessan when it first opened in Boyle Heights 95 years ago as a toddler or young child, you might recall a restaurant that was synonymous with delicious kosher dishes and a family spirit.
Most people today know the legendary delicatessen from its famous Fairfax Avenue location, from the entryway brimming with baked goods (mmm, black and white cookies) to the one of the most instantly recognizable ceilings in all of Southern California (a leafy fall season adding bright flair to the energy-filled dining room).

WATCH HEREYou also are surely aware of the restaurant's Hot Pastrami Sandwich, which is as legendary as the location where it is enjoyed.
Hefty and meaty and full of unmistakable notes of rye mellowness, and served alongside a perfectly sour pickle, the sandwich is a stand-out in a region known for its supreme sandwich prowess.
And on the evening of Monday, Aug. 3, starting at 6 p.m., this fill-you-up superstar will be priced at 95 cents, all to honor the 95th anniversary of Canter's Deli.
It was in 1931 that Canter Bros. Delicatessen, a new kosher-centered venture helmed by Benjamin, Joseph, and Ruben Canter, debuted in Boyle Heights.
A second spot on Fairfax Avenue came less than two decades later, but, through the decades, tried-and-true gems like the matzo ball soup and Corned Beef Reuben kept tables buzzing and that autumn-pretty ceiling aglow.

If you do swing by the bustling eatery Aug. 3 after 6 p.m., keep in mind that the Hot Pastrami Sandwich special will conclude at midnight. And for sure: If you prefer a plant-based version, just request Mrs. Goldfarb's plant-based Corned Beef.
On the side? Look for that all-important pickle, along with coleslaw and a chocolate chip rugula.
As for the good-to-knows before you go-go-go to 419 N. Fairfax Avenue? You'll need to dine at the restaurant to enjoy your 95-cent pastrami — you'll want to booth-it-up and soak up that incredible ceiling, so no worries there — and you'll be limited to one order.
