On January 25, 2025, Kristi Noem was officially sworn in as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Her confirmation followed a 59-34 vote in the Republican-controlled Senate, securing her role as the nation’s top security official.

Kristi Noem’s Political Career

Noem’s entry into public service began with her appointment to South Dakota’s Farm Service Agency committee, where she oversaw agricultural programs and loans under the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In 2010, after serving in the South Dakota legislature for several years, Noem was elected as South Dakota’s lone representative in the U.S. House. Running on a platform of tax reduction, limited government, and transparency, she was later elected in 2018 as the state’s first female governor. She resigned from the governorship in January 2025 to assume her role as the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.

Kristi Noem’s Family and Education

Kristi Noem was born Kristi Lynn Arnold on November 30, 1971, in Watertown, South Dakota, to Ron and Corrine Arnold, both farmers and ranchers. She attended Northern State University before taking courses at South Dakota State University and Mount Marty College.

In 1994, following her father’s tragic farming accident, Noem postponed her studies to manage the family’s agricultural business alongside her brother. They raised cattle, corn, soybeans, and wheat while expanding their operations to include a hunting lodge and restaurant.

She later completed her bachelor’s degree in political science from South Dakota State University in 2011. Noem has been married to Bryon Noem since 1992, and they have three children.
