Young sensation Carlos Alcaraz has etched his name into tennis history, attaining a unique Grand Slam feat with a stunning four-set victory over defending champion Jannik Sinner in the US Open final in New York Sunday night. The 22-year-old Spaniard won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to claim his second US Open crown and sixth major, exacting revenge for his lone defeat in a Grand Slam final by Sinner at Wimbledon earlier this year. Sinner’s loss at Flushing Meadows also meant the US Open has not seen a back-to-back champion since Roger Federer lifted five straight trophies between 2004 and 2008.

With the win, Alcaraz scripted history as he became the youngest man ever to win multiple Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces after 37 years. Alcaraz, 22, who has won two Wimbledon titles on grass (2023 and 2024), two Roland Garros titles on clay (2024 and 2025) and two US Open titles on hard courts (2022 and 2025), is now the fourth man to win multiple majors on every surface, after tennis greats Mats Wilander, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

YOUNGEST PLAYER TO WIN MULTIPLE GRAND SLAMS ON ALL THREE SURFACES

    • Carlos Alcaraz - 22 years, 125 days - 2025
    • Mats Wilander - 24 years, 6 days - 1988
    • Rafael Nadal - 24 years, 88 days - 2010
    • Novak Djokovic - 34 years, 9 days - 2021

According to tennis.com, Wilander and Nadal won their pair of multiple major titles on all the three surfaces at the age of 24. Wilander was just over 24 when he won the US Open in 1988, his second major title on hard courts while Nadal did in 2010 at Wimbledon in 2010, his second Grand Slam on grass. Djokovic is the oldest among all as he had done it at 34 after winning Roland Garros in 2021, his second major title on clay. The Serbian great, however, is the only man in history to win three or more major titles on every surface, at the age of 36, achieving the feat at Roland Garros in 2023.

MULTIPLE GRAND SLAM WINNERS ON ALL THREE SURFACES

    • Mats Wilander: 2 (Hard), 3 (Clay), 2 (Grass)
    • Rafael Nadal: 6 (Hard), 14 (Clay), 2 (Grass)
    • Novak Djokovic: 14 (Hard), 3 (Clay), 7 (Grass)
    • Carlos Alcaraz: 2 (Hard), 2 (Clay), 2 (Grass)

Alcaraz - who displaced Sinner to reclaim the World No. 1 ranking - will return to top spot on Monday after a gap of two years, since September 2023, ending the Italian's 27-match winning long streak on hard-court at Grand Slams. Alcaraz has now defeated Sinner in seven of the past eight encounters, extending his overall lead to 10-5. Both Alcaraz and Sinner have dominated the Grand Slam circuit after sharing the last of eight Grand Slams between them, winning four each to establish their authority over the rest of the others in the sport including 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
