Serena Williams has candidly spoken about her weight loss journey, sharing both the challenges and the motivation that drove her transformation. The tennis icon shared that her decision was driven by a strong desire to focus on her health and well-being, particularly after the birth of her two daughters.

In an exclusive interview with People, the 23-time Grand Slam champion shared that she has been using a GLP-1 medication to support her weight loss journey, through which she has shed more than 31 pounds.

“I feel great,” she told People. “I feel really good and healthy. I feel light physically and light mentally.”

Williams revealed that her struggle with weight began after the birth of her first daughter, Alexis Olympia, in 2017, when she experienced significant postpartum changes to her body.

“I never was able to get to the weight I needed to be no matter what I did, no matter how much I trained,” Williams explained. “It was crazy because I'd never been in a place like that in my life where I worked so hard, ate so healthy and could never get down to where I needed to be at.”

Williams faced similar challenges following the birth of her second daughter, Adira River, in August 2023. While she initially dropped a significant amount of weight within the first two weeks, her progress soon came to a halt. “I never lost another pound,” she remarked.

As a former professional athlete confident in her ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle, Williams realised it was time to explore a different approach. She turned to Ro, a direct-to-patient healthcare company, for guidance with a GLP-1 treatment. GLP-1, short for glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, influences satiety in the brain, with well-known brands including Ozempic and Mounjaro.

Williams acknowledged the ongoing debate around GLP-1 medications and admitted she felt apprehensive about using one herself. “I did a lot of research on it. I was like, 'is this a shortcut? What are the benefits? What are not the benefits?' I really wanted to dive into it before I just did it."

Once Williams decided it was the right path for her, she consulted a doctor through Ro and began weekly GLP-1 injections around six months after Adira’s birth. The Olympic gold medalist says the weight loss has left her feeling healthier, more energized, and better than ever.

“They were super supportive and it was easy to get the medication,” Williams, who is now a celebrity patient ambassador for Ro, says. “I lost over 31 pounds using my GLP-1 and I was really excited about that weight loss.”

Williams highlighted that GLP-1 significantly boosted the healthy habits she was already committed to - from maintaining a clean diet to staying active, whether through elite tennis training or regular gym sessions. She said that’s exactly why she wants to share her journey, believing many people will connect with her experience and struggles.
