Synopsis

The Government of Maharashtra has declared September 08, 2025, as a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The public holiday on September 05, 2025, declared earlier has been cancelled. Read below to know more about what the Reserve Bank of India said in its circular dated September 4, 2025.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on September 4, 2025 in a circular said that there is a change in public holiday (September 5, 2025) under the Negotiable Instruments Act and thus no transactions and settlements in government securities, forex and money markets will be done on September 8, 2025.

RBI said: “The Government of Maharashtra has declared September 08, 2025, as a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The public holiday on September 05, 2025, declared earlier has been cancelled.”

In the circular dated September 4, 2025, the RBI said:


  • There will be no transactions and settlements in Government securities, foreign exchange, money markets and rupee interest rate derivatives on September 08, 2025.
  • The Government securities market, foreign exchange market, money market and rupee interest rate derivatives market will now be operational on September 05, 2025.
  • Settlement of all outstanding transactions due on September 08, 2025 (Monday) will get postponed to the next working day, i.e., September 09, 2025 (Tuesday). Settlement of the auction of Government of India Dated Securities conducted on September 04, 2025 (Thursday) will take place on September 09, 2025 (Tuesday).
  • The Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) and Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) windows under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) will be available as per the revised holiday. Accordingly, all the SDF and MSF bids placed today will get reversed tomorrow i.e., September 5, 2025.
  • Further, the SDF and MSF windows will be available as usual on all days as per the extant guidelines.

Banks are closed on September 5, 2025 in Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Aizawl (Mizoram), Belapur and Nagpur (Maharashtra), Bengaluru(Karnataka), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Dehradun (Uttarakhand), Hyderabad (Telangana), Imphal (Manipur), Jammu and Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir), Kochi (Kerala), Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Kanpur and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), New Delhi, Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Ranchi (Jharkhand) and Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), on the occasion of Id-E-Milad and Thiruvonam.

The Maharashtra government on Thursday said the public holiday on account of Eid-e-Milad in Mumbai city and suburban district will be observed on September 8, instead of September 5.
