
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently issued a notification revising the holiday schedule for September, which has led to changes in banking operations and settlement dates. Banks across most states will remain open on September 8, 2025. However, banks in Maharashtra will be closed as public holiday on September 05, 2025, was cancelled.
On September 4, 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled a public holiday dated September 5, 2025, under the Negotiable Instruments Act in Maharashtra. As a result, there will be no transactions or settlements in government securities, forex, and money markets on September 8, 2025.
RBI said: “The Government of Maharashtra has declared September 08, 2025, as a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The public holiday on September 05, 2025, declared earlier has been cancelled.”
In the circular dated September 4, 2025, the RBI said:
Banks are closed in Jammu and Srinagar for the Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi on September 12, 2025. Eid was celebrated on September 6, 2025.

Banks are closed in Tripura, Assam and West Bengal to celebrate Maha Saptami, Durga Puja on September 29, 2025.

In the circular dated September 4, 2025, the RBI said:
- There will be no transactions and settlements in Government securities, foreign exchange, money markets and rupee interest rate derivatives on September 08, 2025.
- The government securities market, foreign exchange market, money market and rupee interest rate derivatives market will now be operational on September 05, 2025.
- Settlement of all outstanding transactions due on September 08, 2025 (Monday) will get postponed to the next working day, i.e., September 09, 2025 (Tuesday). Settlement of the auction of Government of India Dated Securities conducted on September 04, 2025 (Thursday) will take place on September 09, 2025 (Tuesday).
- The Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) and Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) windows under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) will be available as per the revised holiday. Accordingly, all the SDF and MSF bids placed today will get reversed tomorrow i.e., September 5, 2025.
- Further, the SDF and MSF windows will be available as usual on all days as per the extant guidelines.
