More than the Nifty and Sensex, it is positive market breadth which reflects the street’s underlying optimism. A part of this is probably thanks to the statement over the weekend indicating a possible thaw in the India-US relationship which has been in the freezer for some time. Also, the street has started to build in a bullish start to festive season sales. There is, of course, nothing wrong in being bullish, but keep your expectations in check and be nimble-footed at this point of time. Our selected stocks for today depict a strong upward trajectory in their overall average score which is based on five key pillars: Earnings, fundamentals, relative valuation, risk, and price momentum. This implies that there has been a significant improvement in their market outlook in the given time frame.

These large- and mid-cap stocks can give more than 28 % return in 1 year, according to analysts
| NewsThe way the market reacted to the GST rate rationalisation clearly shows that “sell-on-news mode” is still active. Now there are two reasons why the market has been in this particular mode. First: Some risks are still on the table (the India-US tariff tiff). The reason why we consider this a risk is that the 50% tariff cannot continue for long. Either it has to be settled, or it will escalate, with more goods being impacted, or even higher tariffs. History suggests that usually such wars don't start easily. But once they do, ego is the biggest hurdle to a solution. So, unless this is resolved by year-end, it will become an even bigger issue. The second reason: Valuations. However, GST brings some hope. We may see better top and bottom lines in some segments.

There are short term themes which play in the market and then there are some stories which are long-term and structural in nature. So, if you are looking to invest from a perspective of more than the medium term, which is surely more than two years or so, ensure that, while you allocate some money to the theme of the street, you put a large part of the money in stocks where the operating matrix is such that the runaway of growth is much bigger and larger.

Apollo Micro Systems 140% gain is 2x higher than every other defence stock. Can you buy it now?
| NewsApollo Micro Systems has given investors great returns. The company's stock has performed better than other defence stocks. Its financial results are strong and orders are increasing. The company is expanding into exports and new technologies. Government initiatives are helping the defence sector grow. Experts believe the stock will continue to perform well.

Here’s the thumb rule: Always make a distinction between what is happening to the stock price and what is happening to the fundamentals of a company or sector. There are times, however, when this is even more important. At this point of time, the risk of more headwinds for the economy are high. But did the movement of the market on Monday give you that feeling? So, a couple of things: If you are putting money into the market, make sure it is not money you need in a hurry. Also: Focus on a few businesses and even fewer stocks; and ignore the noise on the street.

Sometimes, in the stock market, connecting the dots is important. Now, the question: What made the stock market move up on Monday? There was certainly nothing positive regarding the India-US trade treaty. So, clearly, there was something else. While in the market one cannot be 100% sure about anything, the trigger for the rally probably was the MF numbers for July which were released on Monday. It clearly showed an improvement. How is this important?

Because we have the word “Hold ” in the headline, does it mean today’s list only has stocks where the analyst recommendation is “Hold”? No. But our headline says “Hold”, because, at a time the markets are volatile and bears are again on the prowl, the first instinct is to either buy to “average out” prices, or sell in order to protect profit. But in reality, the best action may well be no action. Just ignore what is happening in the market, whether it is noise about global events or even earnings. Just to put this in perspective. Remember February 2022? That was when Russia launched its full-scale war against Ukraine. There was panic and the global markets melted. Today, nobody even talks about the war that still rages on. So, if you are holding the right stock, it will pay off in the long term. Do just that: Hold.

After a strong run fueled by robust orders and Operation Sindoor, Indian defence stocks are facing turbulence. Shares of companies like Mazagon Dock and Cochin Shipyard have declined significantly, dragging down the Nifty India Defence index. This downturn is driven by concerns over high valuations, potential delivery delays, and execution risks.

When the Nifty and Sensex are rising every other day in tandem with bullish headlines, it is difficult to think rationally about valuations. Similarly, when they are falling every second day, it is difficult to think about what business you will own when you buy a stock, and that corrections are part markets, and that they will keep happening. And that, in the end, it is all about earnings.

Indian defence stocks, including HAL and BDL, experienced a downturn on Friday, with shares tumbling up to 5% as investors booked profits after a sustained rally. The Nifty India Defence index declined for the third consecutive session, reflecting a shift in sentiment from optimism to caution.

HAL shares: This significant handover occurred at L&T’s Precision Manufacturing & Systems Complex in Coimbatore, representing a key milestone in the strengthening partnership between the private sector and defense manufacturing.

PL Capital cited strength in domestic-facing sectors like pharma, banks, capital goods, defence, and power, as trigger for a Nifty rally. The brokerage has also raised its bull-case target to 28,957 and listed 17 top stock picks across large, mid, and small caps.

Mutual funds cut Rs 1,700 crore exposure in 9 defence stocks. Too expensive to buy or smart exit?
| NewsThe defence stock rally is losing steam as mutual funds offloaded Rs 1,713 crore across nine stocks in June, led by Solar Industries, Zen Technologies, and Bharat Forge. Post-Operation Sindoor optimism and NATO-led tailwinds pushed valuations into overheated territory, prompting institutional exits amid concerns of stretched pricing and execution risks.

When buying a stock, it would be good to ask yourself some questions. Why am I buying this particular stock? When or what will make me sell the stock? Clarity on these questions will help sort out many problems and probably lead to better returns in the market. These questions are particularly relevant when the markets are in volatile mode. Also, and more importantly, when valuations are not cheap and you have some money to invest in stock markets.
